Im trying to write a fan fic about a scientist who is working on something in the era of the New Republic. He does not believe in the Force in the way he doesnt think it controls fate. (He acknowledges, however, that there is an energy field that some sentients can manipulate) I just need something for him to be researching. It just has to sound cool and scientific. It can NOT be game-changing or something that can alter the story in a dramatic way Also it cant have already been done in Legends or Canon. I want a fresh idea.

It cannot be

-A time machine

-A teleporter

-A matter replicator

-A singularity Weapon

-Any type of droid

-Anything to do with holograms

-A food synthesizer

-Anything to do with the Force or Midi-chlorians

-A shrink ray

-A freeze ray

-pico and femtotechnology

-A Dyson sphere or any type of megastructure.

-Liquid metal armor or a nano morph

-Any improvements on the hyperdrive

-Limb regeneration

-Hyperspace nullifier

Knowledge Transfer (Instant learning like in the Matrix)
-Philosophers Stone

-Kinetic weapons

-Solar sail

-Anything to do with kyber crystals

-Gene editing

-Mech suit

-Gender change

In canon, during the Empire, scientists were researching methods to control droids, lasers that can punch through deflector shields and ship scale disintegrators. These ideas are therefore taken.
My scientist is called upon by the New Republic to investigate why the supermassive black hole is more active than usual and sucking in things from a further range. I just need something for the scientist to be studying before he is called away. It has to sound fresh and cool.
Im looking not for a gadget or piece of tech. Ive decided everything technological that we can think of, can be done. Speeders with deflector shields? Sure. We havent seen them but they can easily be done. Im looking for something that would still be an emerging field of science. Something a Type II/III civilization would do next. Any ideas?

Fully automated moisture farming

Biological limb replacements

Wookie Depilatory (for swimsuit season)

Replacing blasters with phasers (for less clean-up)

Teleportation (eliminating star cruisers and land speeders)(and most of the special effects budget)

Less irritating and more useful protocol droids (swiss army droids)

Phase transitions of exotic matter or dark matter. Sounds cool to me, even if we have no idea whether such matter can even have a phase transition.

Warp technoligies, a an alternate technology to hyperspace for ftl.

Cloning exact duplicates of criminals, so that they always have an alibi, ya know?  If that doesn't work, they can rat on each other.  Having identical DNA, the Man will never be able to prove which one did it.

I was asking for ideas on what a scientist could be working on in the Star Wars galaxy. However my list of can nots are more akin to what an engineer would be working on. Then I guess that’s what I really meant. So that being said I ask. What can an engineer in the Star Wars galaxy be working on?. He works for the canon New Republic.

Things he can’t be working on

1.) Dyson sphere- Believe it or not it already exists in SWTOR

2.) Matrioksha Brain- Computers aren’t that advanced. (HOWEVER, if you have a generic Star Wars name for this- I will take it. Matrioksha is Russian nesting dolls and would obviously not be applicable for Star Wars

3.) A Giant Underground City- Sullust has tons of these.

4.) Kransnikov Tube- Would be too much of a gamechanger for travel

5.) Ford-Svaitar mirror- Too much of a gamechanger for travel

6.) Nicoll-Dyson Laser- We already have the Death Star and Starkiller Base

7.) Space elevator- They have those

8.) Shellworld- Waste of time. Plenty of planets to work with

9) Alderton Disk- Too big

10.) Ringworld- Exists on Ringo Vinda

11.) Underwater cities- Plenty of those

12.) Any type of space habitat.

Any ideas?

Ahh. Well with my SW cannon being rusty at best...

Some automation or minimization to deflector shields,

Mira variables and how to harvest from them. (those are just funny real science after all)

giving a droid cook the ability to taste it's own awful food (as punishment for making food so awful)

the perfect mini-fridge backpack(because a cold one is important when you can die at any moment)

WHY a turbo that should make FTL faster is making it stall instead

How to convey more information with/from a blinking light

anti-chafing powder for armor

better breach patch kits

anti-rain personal shields (because ponchos are for rebels)

psi-proof-helmets (never again will a force user convince you your pants are on fire with words)

bacta-in-a-spray-can (for when your pants really were on fire)

redundant systems (why is there never a backup again?)

alternative power sources (see, it turns out these Womp Rats are a dense and renewable energy source if you burn them the right way...)

Just say he is working on a upgraded form of a generic technology like a Phasing Kyber Crystals. Personally, you removed by favorite technologies which are Nanomorphs,Gene Engineering and singularity weapons.

What about a Planetkiller that is unlike the death star using another thing besides a laser such as a Quantum Bomb Swarm or Nano-machine Swarm with Antimatter bombs in the nanite.

Or a Metachlorinian Biological weapon to kill Jedi with high metachlorinian counts.

On improving the hyperdrive. What could he do to improve it besides:

*Making them travel through hyperspace faster

*Requiring less fuel

*Allowing them to leave the galaxy and travel to others
