Simply, it has become more common for us to divert our attentional resources elsewhere. Just because the object went behind the curtain does not mean it has disappeared. Object permanence spreads to the other lifeforms on the planet as well. It's up to each of us to realize that they still exist and have not (yet) disappeared.
