Whats the latest on this??

sweep it under the rug and forgetta' 'bout it? (Italian mob boss accent)

45 day hold while congress investigates; prognosis uncertain. Definately stimulating a lot of serious discussion amidst all the nonsense. Serenity now...serenity now...:hihi:

Since we already have other foreign companies operating some of our port terminals, if they vet the UAE company then I see no reason not to go ahead on the deal. Some dead guy said, "keep your friends close and your enemies closer.":phones:

The Dubai Ports company has withdrawn from the deal saying they will transfer all control to US firms (whatever that menas?:hyper: ). Congress said today there is nothing in this now requiring their legislative action. On to a new crisis!:umno: :hihi: :naughty: :umno:

By most accounts, it means that Dubai Ports World has indicated its intention to sell the parts of P&O providing services for US ports.

It’s a complicated deal. Clearly, if potential purchasers believes that DP must sell these contracts, they will be inclined to offer a lower bid than if they believe DP has the flexibility to refuse all offers. Although partially managed by the UAE government, DP is publicly owned, so if a low sale such as this substantially reduces the value of its shares, the company is vulnerable to lawsuits by investors alleging that the deal was mismanaged.

Look for 2 ways that DP may seek to avoid this. One, the US (or perhaps a “friendly” foreign) purchaser may be, directly or thought other companies, incentived or coerced by the US or other governments to keep the purchase price high – possibly much higher than the price DP paid. Another is that the purchase price will be low, but the US or other government will incentive or coerce US or foreign investors to purchase DP stock, raising its value to offset the effects of the sale loss.

I fear that Congress’s sense that all is now OK may derail the recent positive focus on improving port security that the DP imbroglio has set in motion. Regardless of the nationality of companies managing US ports, if inspections and other security measures are inadequate, smuggling with the potentially to cause substantial loss of life, may occur.

:hyper: The plot thickens! (some more:hyper: ) Congress may yet pass legislation & it seems technically the sale is going through. Dubai Ports World would set up a type of "offshore" partnership similar to what Halliburton did to work in Iran until recently. (So I just heard anyway on PBS evening news.)

Seems this ol' thread is hangin' on by er...a thread.:umno: :umno: :naughty:

Of course the longer we keep focused on the "deal", the longer we stay un-focused on the security issues.

A good point indeed, sir Turtle...

Another issue that bothers me is how this makes us look to the international community, the UAE (United Arab Emmirates), China, Venezuala... The Dubai company is a strong business, with good leaders and business sense, and a huge desire to make bunches of money, so they will not rule out future deals with the US (one radio guest last night on NPR said "They will not cut off their nose to spite their face."), but this whole situation certainly must leave a bad taste in their mouth. Social perceptions aside, we will never survive the coming economics of the world if we isolate ourselves from those who are on the rise.

When we will learn? When will we change? When will we be able to co-exist with the world? Please note, these are all meant to be rhetorical, not to derail the thread.

Cautiously optimistic. :)

News today from Congress on this (and related issues):

The Raw Story | US Congress tightens security in foreign takeovers

The US Congress on Wednesday approved a bill to strengthen government and intelligence oversight of foreign takeovers of US firms in the interest of national security.

The move came a year after an outcry among US lawmakers over Dubai Ports World's (DPW) acquisition of a company managing US port facilities, which prompted DPW to back away from the deal.
