GPS driving

Recommended Posts

Ok, in order to feel like a total dork, i had to start doing otherwise dorky things. Not the least of those is wardriving, but till a very recent time, i have not been using gps to record the locations. As you can imagine, that has changed, and first results from last knight are in :(

I am working on google maps implementation for my website (well at some point it will go up there) for now, i will post KML files, and link to them here

How do you view them?

Install Google Earth

Download the kml file

Open google earth

Click file > Open

Navigate to the downloaded kml file

Press Open

presto ;)

I will probably post updated files (as i can merge them together, etc) as i map more

For now, though http://securityenthusiast.com/files/Kismet-May-08-2008-3.kml

Equipment:

Asus Eee Pc - Xubuntu

Alfa AWUS036H - usb card (going to mod it to not burn up when i increase power output on it (it can go up to 500mw, but i will operate at a legal value ;) )

7 DBi - car roof mount antenna, 5 foot cable and rp-sma connector into the card

USB GPS dongle - super fast lock on speeds, impressive power too (also car roof mount for precision)

Radio Shack 350W inverter (i dont use it to anywhere near that though)

Setup:

gpsd

kismet

a python script to convert kismet gps dump to kml :)

(if you have questions, please post, and knowing this question is coming, no, IT IS NOT ILLEGAL)

The old rules of thumb don't seem to have changed much for newer equipment.

1) Never run above 90% rating.

2) Continuous use, 80% rating.

3) Continuous use and hot day, 70% rating.

An oversized power supply is your cheapest best investment. There will always be something ugly coming down the wire. You plan against the ugly incident not for SOP. Come what may, the fuse is usually protected by the circuit board.
