  1. I collected red apple seedlings from an orchard near a waterfall in 1999. I waited till 2006 before it started fruiting with tiny slightly bitter reddish fruits.
  2. Hi montrelblundell, science research takes twists and turns to arrive at the goalpost. What may be rejected today as fraud will one day be proven as the gospel truth. Let us watch this "acid bath" stem cell research for a while; the co-authors might yet be proven right,
  3. Hi Deepwater6, it seems to me that we humans have such resilience when it comes to physiological functions. I am a nocturnal animal by nature. I hardly sleep more than 4 hours each night and don't go to bed before midnight, yet in the morning I am fully awake and function normally. However, I usually compensate for my night sleep deficit by taking catnaps of 15 minutes in the afternoon.
  4. Hi Paul, apparently you have not been long married. The best way to manage your affairs with your wife is either to ignore her emotional and irrational behavior or else as you pointed out, you might be on the way to see a "shrink". A friend of mine gave me an anecdote: when your wife starts ranting, tune off or get the hell out of the house; go get drunk and when you return you will be so inebriated that she might even feel sorry for you.
  5. Hello Deepwater6, thanks for your posting and the reference which I have read. It occurs to me that we normal individuals do not appreciate our luck being born as individuals. Those conjoined twins represent nature's work at its weirdest. Unlike some of us who are forever complaining over any little inconvenience; imagine the the ultimate inconvenience endured by these twins. My heart goes out to them.
  6. Hi mt774, your posting reminds me of my experience in Chicago. I took up a job as ice-cream salesman the summer after graduation. My sales route took me through some of the seediest part of "South-side". So many houses are left abandoned because the owners had either moved on to better neighborhoods or been sent packing by estate developers.
  7. Dear Turtle and SaxonViolence, thank you both for the enlightenment. It means then that I have to get some pre-grafted saplings, and plant them and hopefully in a few years harvest some real juicy apples.
  8. Please where can I find information on total these coppery red colored lunar eclipses or a blood moon, which can be viewed in West and Central Africa or are they visible only in North America?
  9. I have often wondered if meteorology is an exact science, how come whether forecasts by meteorological stations are sometimes off the mark, when they predict rain, the sun shines; how come?
  10. Please can anyone explain why red apples don't do well in the tropics. A few years ago, I planted some Red Apple seedlings in my garden. When they matured, instead of producing juicy big Red Apples, all I got were tiny ones. What happened?
  11. I need to ask the question: if the study of ethics is universal, why does ethical behaviour vary so much from one society to another, from one political system to another?
  12. I need to take this as a joke: is this the reason why our movies usually depict extra-terrestrial beings as slimy fungi-like creatures? When scientists eventually create life from fungi that resemble humans, I hope they will not be slimy too.
  13. One thing that ordinary people seem to forget in discussing the origin of the universe is that all the theories propounded so far are just that: theories. Since the study of science requires that for theories to be accepted as facts, they need to be proven, please tell me who has proven the "big bang" theory.
  14. If we know so much about the negative effects of global warming on our world climate, why do so many governments for economic reasons refuse to cooperate to lower the carbon monoxide being released to the atmosphere? What affects one part of the world is felt in other parts; if our world survives much longer, it will be through the cooperative efforts of all of us.
  15. Medical doctors may live longer, but how much more careful are they about the health of their families? I have seen cases of doctors who are married to nurses neglecting to neglecting to give their children preventive medical care like immunization for common diseases while ordinary parents follow their doctor's advice to give their children a healthy future.
  16. Orthodox medical practitioners often frown at the claims of Alternate medicine when the later claim that they have cures for diseases such as cancer and AIDS that have stumped orthodox medicine. How do we normal people know the truth or do we take each party at their word? Please read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_cancer_treatments
  17. One of the major miracles attributed to Jesus the Christ is bringing the dead to life, e.g. resurrecting His friend Lazarus. The hope of living forever must be one of the reasons why a lot of people flock to the Christian religion in droves. Some modern day miracle workers, particularly pentecostal preachers, often claim that they can bring the dead to life: true or false I do not know; but i know many of them are so stupendously rich, they have jet aircraft, build universities in their names and generally smile all the way to the bank.
  18. Hi arKane, I wish I had known about the laser procedure for Hemorrhoids before having mine removed by normal surgical procedures. It was so painful that I had to be put on anaesthesia for several days.
  19. On the issue of antibiotic resistance, the focus here seems to be on eating animals treated with antibiotics. How about us humans who abuse antibiotics? Some people use prescribed across-the-counter drugs indiscriminately: http://www.bbc.com/news/health-20354536. This is one cause of breeding of drug resistant bacteria. We already have multi-drug-resistant (MDR) and are faced with total-drug-resistant Tuberculosis.
  20. I have read all the replies to this poser: "Why are we getting fat?" The simple answers appear to be: we don't take enough exercise and we eat too much fatty foods. Take a look at pictures of East African runners at both the Olympics and Marathons. Do you see any fatty among them? in the distant past, Americans used to dominate both the sprints and the marathons, but alas! our growing obesity has made us give way to the Jamaicans and Kenyans.
  21. A Chinese proverb says: no matter how wise a man, a woman can always flop him; and no matter how stupid a woman she can always get her man.
  22. I have to agree with Turtle, we have more pressing problems like famine, desertification of parts of our planet, proxy wars in Ukraine, Africa and drug wars in Latin America. Those who are safe in their homes are worried about doomsday: if you persist you may soon have your prayers answered like Job in the Christian Bible "That which I fear most has now come upon me"
  23. From the posts here, we all seem to forget one essential attribute of science research and new ideas; they seem crazy at first because of their departure from known and accepted knowledge. A few centuries ago, we thought the earth was flat Gallelio proved us wrong. Later science claimed that the atom was the smallest indivisible component of an element, do we still believe that today? Cloning started with sheep; there is no reason why we will not soon change our ethical views on cloning of primates: cloning to gin up a Neanderthal baby will soon happen.
  24. A new really green energy source was reported recently by scientists through mimicking the process of photosynthesis in plants. This research may be the beginning of generating electricity from plants for home use. For further reading see http://www.technologyreview.com/news/521671/cheap-hydrogen-from-sunlight-and-water/
