Phone number math

I know this has a logical explanation, I just don't know what it is. Any explanations for those without a degree in mathematics?

(sorry guys & gals, I'm guessing this only works in the States)

1.. GRAB A CALCULATOR. (YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO DO THIS ONE IN YOUR HEAD).

2.. KEY IN THE FIRST THREE DIGITS OF YOUR PHONE NUMBER (NOT THE AREA CODE).

3.. MULTIPLY BY 80.

4.. ADD 1.

5.. MULTIPLY BY 250.

6.. ADD THE LAST 4 DIGITS OF YOUR PHONE NUMBER.

7.. ADD THE LAST 4 DIGITS OF YOUR PHONE NUMBER AGAIN !

8.. SUBTRACT 250.

9.. DIVIDE NUMBER BY 2.

DO YOU RECOGNIZE THE ANSWER ?

let's call the first 3 digits X, and the last 4 digits Y -

1. multiply the first 3 digits by 80:

80*X

2. add 1

80*X + 1

3. multiply by 250

250*(80*X+1) = 20,000 * X +250

4. add the last 4 digits

20,000 * X + 250 + Y

5. add the last 4 digits again

20,000 * X + 250 + Y + Y = 20,000 * X + 250 + 2*Y

6. subtract 250

20,000 * X + 2*Y

7. divide by 2

10,000 * X + Y

which is your phone number, the first 3 digits slid over 4 places to make room

for the last 4 digits.

Not only a logical explanation, but a simple one. Thanks.

Hunh??? What's going on???? ;)

I tried this four times with my office phone number, and it didn't work. I called the number I kept getting, and somebody answered and said they were the police department. They said they were putting out an APB on YOU for spreading really bad "pocket rocket" jokes.
