Trying to build a novel musical instrument using solid metal (aluminum, brass,…) round bars.  I’m trying to find an equation to calculate the note that will be produced by a bar of a given material, length and diameter. Is there such a formula?  I’ve been out of physics for decades and don’t recall how this may be done. Thank you for any help.

This is an interesting topic involving natural resonance of of various sizes and shapes of metal bars.

There are indeed formulas to calculate the notes produced.

Please have patience and I will address this as soon as I have some free time, or maybe someone else will get to this before I do.

I just wanted you to know you post is not being ignored.

Unfortunately, it seems that Jpnolan, who started this topic, has not been back since making the opening post.

Consequently, it is difficult for me to find the incentive to go into this in detail.

However, I did find this interesting paper which does delve into what he wanted to know about; the equations for the musical note that will be produced by a metal bar of a given material, length and diameter.

I will just drop this paper here for now and see if the OP returns and wants to discuss this further.
