Metaphors for Progressives

Rade

Recommended Posts

They are like lost sheep. So I would like this post to offer useful political metaphors for Progressives--time to begin reading George Lakoff:

George Lakoff - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Please add to the list:

Metaphors for Progressives

1. Pay your fair membership dues to America

2. Be poison-free

3.

:dog: ;) :hihi:  :) ;) :sheepjump:

hi radem, ya ol' sheepdog you! :wave2: :D i read the wiki and i'm ready to get picky. i'm in first because this is about language, words really, and second because it's about selling words. that chomsky vehemently disagrees with lakoff isn't going to help lakoff's case in my book, but i'll try to take that poison out. ;)

politically what i get from laughoff is fight fire with ice. conservatives put in hot terms so progressives should replace them with cool terms. if you add what you are replacing in your list, i.e. "fair membership" vs. the conservatives' term you are replacing, then i think the setup is better illustrated. just a thought. :phones: so as long as we're upfront that "metaphors for progressives" is a sales-job and must needs contain all that goes with sales-jobs, here's some tasty soy.

the thing is on this metaphor is that everyone is saying it & i wanna hurl every time i hear it. it is "reach across the isle". it, has got to go.

3. [OUT metaphor]reach across the isle: [iN metaphor]consider all views presented

the "across" is the hot word in the metaphor that i think laughoffsky would object to. oui/no?

discuss. :turtle: :cup:

Turtle, I do like the two categories [OUT/IN] you suggest, I'll add appropriate colors for sheep not color blind, let me know if you agree with my modification of your #3:

Metaphors for Progressives

1. [iN metaphor] Pay your fair membership dues to America

[OUT] Tax Relief

2. [iN metaphor] Be poison-free

[OUT]Regulatory Burden

3. [iN metaphor] Embrace all views presented

love the formatting. :phones: not liking changing my "consider" to "embrace". :hihi: i chose each word carefully to avoid what i consider as loaded terms and include what i saw as critical elements to the idea at hand. "embrace" overstates/implies agreement and i don't mean that. the "all" is well, all inclusive, but without the loaded term "inclusive". it's redundant at best. "views" implies information that may or may not be factual. "presented" to clarify the considerer has heard/received the information and that if he/she did not hear/receive the information he/she is not a gd mind-reader.

so, on we go thens. . . . . . ;)

roger. as you may have noticed, i take my word nuances very seriously. :clue: :D

so #4. why not just markets? why qualify it? in my view we are after fitting metaphors, not euphemisms. market is as market does. everyone knows what a market is. get that riduiculous lipstick off that pig!!

5. [iN metaphor] government partnership

[OUT] government takeover

Lipstick removed from #4, but market alone does not a metaphor make, so let me know thoughts on new makeup added to #4.

mmmm...ok. i see some tweaking i'd do on the others too, as if, but let's take one porcine problem at a time. :D first, i'd get rid of "need". it makes america sound needy no matter who says it. not the image i have for america. so, we hunt for a substitute. i'm thinking along the lines of "deserve" or "expect." :magic: "shine" is cheery and all, but it's too bright a shade of red and makes our pig look whorish. :D :D i say no lipstick on this one at all and go instead with some nuanced yet evocative defining eye liner. my new edit this time around for #4 then is...

4. [iN metaphor] America expects equitable markets

[OUT] America needs free markets

i'm tired. catch you on the flip-flop. :hihi: :clue:

But but but, where are the metaphors??

I think conservatives have taken ownership and trademark on all metaphors. There is nothing left for the left to use except honest truths. Sad?

Turtle, I like your modifications, although I would not use "equitable." That is a loaded term and stinks of socialism. Why not:

[in metaphor] America expects fair markets

[out] America expects free markets

Good modifications Turtle & Lawcat.

And yes, it is because the Conservative movement in the USA gives ~ 30 M/yr to think tanks to drum up words for Fox News and radio circus clowns to use, that what we provide here may prove to be of some value. Progressives appear not to be in the loop on the power of myth. G. Lakoff speaks to this issue, the Progressives believe that all they need to do is to provide the good public the "facts" of issues--but time tells us otherwise, does it not ? So, let us see how long this list can be, the more food for thought for sheep the better, I say. So, Onward Metaphor Soldiers...Marching Off to War ---->

Lawcat, I do like your modification of #4, and I removed some fluff. Plus I have added attributions for each.

I need some help with an 'inny' for #6, of prime importance to Progressives at this time.

Metaphors for Progressives:

1. [iN metaphor] Pay your fair membership dues to America(Rade)

[OUT] Tax Relief

2. [iN metaphor] Be poison-free(G. Lakoff)

[OUT] Regulatory Burden

3. [iN metaphor] Consider all views presented(Turtle)

[OUT] Reach across the isle

4. [in metaphor] Fair markets(Lawcat); Equitable markets(Turtle)

[OUT] Free markets

5. [iN metaphor] Government partnership(Turtle)

[OUT] Government takeover

6. [iN metaphor] Healthy Homes Now ???????????

[OUT] Stop Obama Care

nothing left is, as nothing left does. ;)

good call; let us define our terms.

metaphor - definition of metaphor by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.

met·a·phor

n.

1. A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison, as in "a sea of troubles" or "All the world's a stage" (Shakespeare).

2. One thing conceived as representing another; a symbol

so on the whole, it is in the second sense that we intend to rewrite the sound-bites. oui/no?

Turtle, I like your modifications, although I would not use "equitable." That is a loaded term and stinks of socialism.

:jab: i don't think you'd find "fair" bandied about any less frequently in reference to socialism than you would "equitable". by using "equitable", the reader/hearer must pause & consider the term, whereas i see the reader/hearer breeezing past "fair" inasmuch as they think they know what that means.

And yes, it is because the Conservative movement in the USA gives ~ 30 M/yr to think tanks to drum up words for Fox News and radio circus clowns to use, that what we provide here may prove to be of some value. Progressives appear not to be in the loop on the power of myth. G. :turtle: one need look no further than the rise of coffee houses and the newspapers & pamphlets distributed and debated therin, to get the gist of the battle-lines.

gird yer loins fellas & gals! :D :fan:

Warfare is a great matter to a nation;

it is the ground of death and of life;

it is the way of survival and of destruction, and must be examined.

Therefore, go through it by means of five factors;

compare them by means of calculation, and determine their statuses:

One, Way, two, Heaven, three, Ground, four, General, five, Law.

~The Way is what causes the people to have the same thinking as their superiors;

they may be given death, or they may be given life, but there is no fear of danger and betrayal.

~Heaven is dark and light, cold and hot, and the seasonal constraints.

~Ground is high and low, far and near, obstructed and easy, wide and narrow, and dangerous and safe.

~General is wisdom, credibility, benevolence, courage, and discipline.

~Law is organization, the chain of command, logistics, and the control of expenses.. ...

just thinking we needn't limit ourselves to just one progressive metaphor per regressive sound bite. how about a menu formatted like this? :hihi:

4. [OUT] America needs free markets [?]

a. [iN metaphor] America needs markets that shine [rade]

b. [iN metaphor] America expects equitable markets [turtle]

c. [iN metaphor] America expects fair markets [lawcat]

i still intend to get to the others, particularly lakoff's "poison" in #2. but first... another plug for "equitable" over "fair". :dog:

in a word, alliteration. "expect equitable" vs. "expect fair". :D the longer the listener lingers, the more mature the meaning of the message. :cap: :cup:

i explicitly clarified my view/intent in post #6. yes metaphors, no not euphemisms. the rest can speak for themselves. when i want to lay on some political euphemisms, i go to the political euphemisms thread. >> Euphemisms of the Politically Correct Persuasion

I guess they are both as a euphemism refers to function while a metaphor refers to format. These are euphemistic metaphors? Of course one man's euphemism is the next man's dysphemism.
