Workout before work eases stress

LONDON: You can now cite this research to convince your boss to start a gym in the office, for people who exercise on work days "are happier,

suffer less stress and are also more productive".

Researchers at the University of Bristol have found that employees who enjoy a workout before going to work -- or exercise during lunchbreaks -- are better equipped to handle whatever the day threw at them.

The study has also revealed that people's general mood improves on days of exercise; on the contrary, they become less calm on non-exercise days, newspaper the 'Daily Mail' reported.

"Our statistical results were important. On exercise days, people's mood significantly improved after exercising. Mood stayed about the same on days they did not, with the exception of people's sense of calm which deteriorated.

"Critically, workers performed significantly better on exercise days and across all three areas we measured, known as mental-interpersonal, output and time demands," according to lead researcher Jo Coulson.

For their study, the researchers recruited a group of 200 university staff and employees working for a pensions firm and an IT company. Each completed a questionnaire about their mood, workload and performance on days they exercised.
