  1. That's a great idea with the gravity and the marbles. I think my daughter would love that. Thank you. The science fair is for all ages, kindergarten through 12th grade. Most of the kids participating are older, but my daughter loves science and I thought it would be fun. She is not required to participate at her age.
  2. My first grader has the opportunity to participate in a science fair, and I'd like to help her find a project that is unique and fun. If anyone here has any great ideas, I'd love to hear them. Thank you.
  3. I tend to think that buying healthier or organic packaged foods is a lot more expensive. I eat gluten free, and I practically have to take out a loan to go grocery shopping. However if I have the time, it is cheaper for me to buy fresh fruits and veggies and to cook meals from scratch. I don't use a lot of meat. I don't always have the time to do this either.
  4. Medical doctors are still human. They have psychological issues and physical problems just like everyone else. They may know how to care for their children, for example, but they may not have the best parenting skills. Also many medical doctors I have known, particularly surgeons, have big egos. I'm sure that is a positive in many ways, but it can also mean that they think they know everything and will fail to consider new information on topics that are not part of medicine.
  5. I remember a teacher saying to me that intelligence was defined as the ability to learn. I think that makes a lot of sense. I also agree that wisdom is what is learned through experience.
  6. I guess it depends on your opinion of what it means to be educated. I suppose it's true that most, but definitely not all, people graduate from high school knowing how to read, do basic math and have the skills to support themselves in some way. But I don't believe that schools teach critical thinking, at least not on purpose. Arissa, that's how I felt in school too. I felt like it was one giant waste of time. I was like your daughter, and I was basically ignored.
  7. It seems to me that our schools have two functions. One is to serve as a place where children can be supervised while their parents are at work, and the other is as a project politicians can use to get elected and gain support. Schools do not seem to be designed for actually helping children learn or even teaching them how to learn. Was it always this way, or did something happen to create this situation? Or am I wrong?
  8. I think that there is physical pain, and then there is the way we experience physical pain psychologically. There is also a big difference between the way we report a level of pain during the pain and after the pain has occurred and is over. For example, many mothers will complain of terrible pain during childbirth and then say that they cannot remember the pain later. We might be able to measure what happens in the body during physical pain, but I think there are too many psychological possibilities to really be able to say that one person's pain is stronger or not as strong as another.
  9. The way we overuse antibiotics in livestock, especially livestock that is used for human consumption, is literally sickening. It is beyond me how we can honestly believe that it is safe to eat something that has eaten so many antibiotics.
  10. Music education is beneficial to the greater community because music education helps to create people who are able to think logically, understand complicated ideas and tune into their own emotions.
