Calorimetric test of General Relativity

Given two differential scanning calorimeters whose sample pans are located along a north-south line. Each holds a ~15 mg single crystal sphere of benzil, one in space group P3(1)21 (right-handed) and one in P3(2)21 (left-handed). /_H(fusion) for both are simultaneously run. The procedure is run with new crystals at 0600 hrs, 12 noon, 1800 hrs, and midnight local time. If all /_H(fusion) at all times are not equal within experimental error (differential output would be two nulls, a maximum and a reversed maximum), the experiment is repeated the next day with the calorimeters aligned east-west to confirm. The /_/_H(fusion) will have a six hour phase shift on the second day if the signal is real.

 

If there is a reproducible /_/_H, General Relativity (GR) was founded upon two empirically falsified postulates - the Equivalence Principle (EP) and the isotropy of space. Physics will be, ah, displeased. Cartan's or Weitzenböck's teleparallel gravitation would then be acceptable theory.

 

Nomenclature: /_ is uppercase Latin delta, "difference." /_H(fusion) is enthalpy of fusion or heat of melting/gram. /_H(fusion) of ice is 80 calories/gram. One gram of ice at 0 C melts to one gram of water at 0 C by absorbing 80 calories of heat. /_/_H(fusion) is the difference between paired measurements. Orthodox expectation is that the two numbers must be identical, or /_)/_H(fusion)=zero. Is it? Nobody has ever looked.

Great experiment UA & well described at your link. Beyond my scientific curiosity I'm afraid all else I have to offer is that I do live on the 45th parallel (within 1°). Keep us posted on any takers and/or results.:shrug:

Each holds a ~15 mg (2.5- 3 mm diameter) single crystal sphere of benzil, one in space group P3(1)21 (right-handed) and one in P3(2)21 (left-handed). [math]\Delta[/math]H(fusion) for both are simultaneously run. The procedure is run with new crystals at 0600 hrs, 12 noon, 1800 hrs, and midnight local time. If all [math]\Delta[/math]H(fusion) at all times are not equal within experimental error (differential output would be two nulls, a maximum and a reversed maximum), the experiment is repeated the next day with the calorimeters aligned east-west to confirm. How could this work? The Earth spins on its axis with inertial acceleration. It orbits the sun with gravitational acceleration. The line defined by the two opposite parity (oppositely chiral in all directions) test masses forms a 3-D coordinate system with the two accelerations. 24 hours (tropical not sidereal day) cycles the angle between the two accelerations through 360 degrees. A right-handed coordinate system goes flat, inverts to a left-handed coordinate system, goes flat, inverts to right-handed coordinate system... roudn and round

 

If spacetime is achiral and isotropic (no handedness as assumed), it makes no difference if the lumps are parity inversions. If spacetime is chiral and anisotropic (with a vacuum pseudoscalar background), left and right shoes fit on a left foot differently - have different energies. When the shoes melt to socks that fit a left foot identically, the heats of melting must be different. One shoe will start higher in energy that the other one, but they both must arrive at the same endpoint.

 

Almost every university has one DSC. Almost no universities have two. The sweet spot is 45 degrees latitude. The faster the thing whizzes around and the higher its altitude, the greater its inertial acceleration. That means... wait for it... the International Space Station with 52 degree orbital inclination. Riiiight.
