OpenOffice 2.0 vs MS Office

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Now that Google (do no evil) has cojoined with Sun to distribute OOo, I don't see the average PC user dumping M$FT to experiment with what would be new applications. There has to be a real incentive to change so I guess we will have to wait to see what the "carrot" is.

I suppose the "carrot" might be the price, but many PC users may already have a version of Office and it will then be the choice between the upgrade price and the free OOo. It will be interesting to see how the Google/Sun consortium intends to reach the new PC user, who is at the whim of the PC salesperson and their suggestions.

"Do no evil"!?!?

Google are well on the way to being a microsoft clone.

They do plenty that would get anyone else dumped on from on high.

Have you got adwords? Google say they don't take money to boost rankings. One of my sites, top of google for the keywords and the regular search terms, with our sponsored links above our 1 & 2 ranked pages, may seem pretty unassailable. So we stopped the adwords, since we were top anyway.

Page 7 or un-ranked, the very next day!

Turn it back on, three days later we are listed, and a week later (during which takings dropped like a rock!) we are back at number one.

And don't forget, they scan your Gmail for keywords, record everything you click on for later (you can see this easily by turning off javascript on Google) in the searches, and monitor you all over the place. I don't think it unlikely that they could track every last page you go to even if you don't have the Google toolbar telling tales - how else can it know the pagerank if it doesn't report your IP and the sites URL to the google engines? - by doing something clever with the advertising system.

And let's not forget that every time you search, google sets a cookie for the top ranking result page before you even visit the link

So I think they aren't quite evil yet, but then, the machinery is now in place for them to be utterly evil the day they want to be!

Google's pledge to "do no evil'' -trumpeted loudly by company co-founders Larry

Page and Sergey Brin -is spurring even greater scrutiny of company behavior.

Google is telling everybody to "trust them" and at the same time they are cooperating with evil. To appease the ChiComs Google maps shows Taiwan as a province of China. The actions of google are becoming more like those of "con" men. It appears one must completely clear google cookies to keep from being bombarded by repetititve ads that pop up related to something I once searched for.

For searches, I have been going to other "engines" much more often, as it takes longer and longer search phrases to filter out the garbage google collects. For scientific information I will first go to

before attempting to thrash through the google jungle, or hit one of the other search engine URLs I keep in ready access.

you can even block the advertisement to the right of the hypography banner thingy up on the top of the page, and if you have a choice between blocking a picture and an iframe, iframe should be your choice

here are some of the good things i came to come up with to block, aka rules and such:

*clickTag=*

*link1=http://ad*

http://ad*

http://isg*

*doubleclick*

*fastclick*

enjoy....
