Consider a scenario. I wink at a girl in my office. It is not as unpredictable as you might expect. Firstly you are not winking at a girl from some other office (less risk). You have preselected mental preferences.

There may be 2 outcomes :

- Your boss may fire you

- Your boss may rebuke you

 

Either way you are dealing with someone you know (your boss) and hence he is more  likely to be sympathetic to you.

 

This is subconscious risk  management.

 

Amazing how the mind works, eh ?  :roll:
