Greetings,

I am about to do a synthesis that involves using methanol at a certain point

Place the flask in a hot water bath for four hours.

I have learned that methanol has a melting point of –97 °C

boiling point of 64.7 °C

and a flash point of 11°C

I just don't want to start a fire. I have proper equipment such as a hot plate and beakers etc.

what would you recommend a safe temperature?

Could you be a little more specific as to what you are trying to achieve? It's a little difficult to prescribe an appropriate temperature if I don't know what you're trying to do. :Guns:

Anyway, unless you're using a closed system to heat your methanol, you're going to get some evaporation since methanol is rather volatile. If a specific temperature is not necessary for your application, and you don't mind some evaporation, then ~35 degrees C should be fine. As mentioned before however, I couldn't say for certain since I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do.

Best of luck in your experiment!
