Why do some people excel at problem solving in their respective fields like politics, art and science while others are mediocre?

Just my opinion, but I would put attitude right at the top of a list of reasons.  Some people avoid challenges, and others seek them out.  Some people crumble under pressure while others thrive.  I have observed that highly successful people I know view problems as challenges to be overcome, and failures as lessons.
