  1. One last question: How do I know the n value when calculating ionization energies?
  2. Thanks for the help...but I still don't get it. For example what does 3dx2-y2 mean? And what exactly do you mean when you say a point that coincides with zero? Are you talking about the axis, so any point on the x,y, and z axis is a point where no electrons are found?
  3. Well, I just started my first year of university and am taking an inorganic chem course. I did read about schrodingers equation and quantum mechanics but I don't really remember much.
  4. If it's not too much trouble can someone explain to me orbital diagrams and graphs? Why are the s orbitals shaped like a circle while the p and d orbitals are shaped like a dumbbell and clover. Do orbitals have nodes? If so what purpose do they serve? I tried reading the textbook but I can't make any sense of it. Also if I were given a list of cations and anions how would I list them in increaing order through using the periodic table? For example, which is larger K+ or Cl-?
  5. I was wondering if anyone can help me with these questions. What is the total number of atomic orbitals possible at n =3? I thought the answer would be 5 but it's actually 9, can someone explain why there are 9 orbitals? I'm also having trouble with another question. It asks: How many electrons in an atom can have the following sets of numbers: n= 4 and m(subscript l)= +2/-2? The answer is 8 while I thought it was 14. Can someone also explain this?

    Hi

Hi, I just joined so I could hopefully get help with a chem 101 practice question.
