  1. see turtles posting at the top; yes they happen here as well
  2. The energy crisis and a large source of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions would end if big energy companies and the governments could agree to really sink their teeth into developing and BRINGING DOWN THE COSTS of generating electricity from renewables, from the ones everyone knows about like solar, wind and geothermal, and those less well known, like floating heat engines in the warm tropical waters (uses the hot surface water near 88 F degrees and the cold water at depth ~ 40 F to run a carnot cycle engine to produce either power, or fresh water, or some of both) or wave energy, with the exciting new results of the Archimedes Wave Swing. This is a huge partially floating piston-type engine that magnifies the effects of the waves by keeping the cylinder at a higher internal pressure than sea level when it's fully extended, essentially providing an extra bounce to the piston as the waves interact with it, such that the vertical motion of the piston is larger than the height of the waves. I also think many more people need to invest in their own source of energy to run their house or small community, whether its a micro-hydroelectric system on a creek in the property or a wind tower or whatever....WE ALL NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILTY FOR PRODUCING OUR POWER IN A GREEN WAY, EVEN IF COSTS MORE OUT OF OUR POCKET TO START OFF!!
  3. I have done some recent online research into megacryometeors and unfortunately cant post the links yet, until I hit 10 posts. But go to dogpile.com, searc term 'megacryometeors' and the first hit is the best resource, with links to technical articles and some that are not so technical . It seems you need a few atmospheric conditions to come together to produce these, but basically you need the tropopause to lower from above 10,000 feet to about 7000 feet (that's the level in the atmsphere in which there is a temperature and dewpoint discontinuity, the air suddenly becomes much colder and drier above it) and get the air column below that to approach but not reach saturation in the entire column, so that the sky is still clear of clouds. A local weak spot in the ozone layer is also needed over the area. These elements seem to be needed for the iceballs to form, but the actual mechanins is not fully understood. [
  4. Hi all, Im a weather forecaster who found the site while researching megacryometeors, those giant balls of ice that fall from the sky under certain clear sky weather conditions. I have worked for 5 different weather companies in my 14 year career, and now am looking to get into the wind energy field, evaluating proposed wind farm sites. I am one of those people who like to keep learning things, especially about science and how it affects our world. I feel we are in big danger if we allow ourselves to believe that everything is doing OK on planet earth. In reality, we have changed the climate, polluted many areas so badly not much can live there and the rate at which species are going extinct recently is only comparable to the last great die off of species back when the dinosaurs bit the dust. Soon clean drinking water will be the major cause of wars if we don't reverse current trends of over-pumping underground water to irrigate crops; the water levels underground are already up to 50 feet lower in the US plains states from 25 years ago, with similar things occuring in India and other parts of the worls as we.. Did you know that worldwide food production reached its peak about 10 years and has fallen every year since, while the population shows no signs (yet) of slowing it's growth. I still have hope that we can overcome these problems, but it will take getting many, many more people worried about it than those who currently are, before real results can occur.
