Ozone Layer

Recommended Posts

One of the reasons of excessive hotness we fell nowadays  is the thinning of the ozone layer. We know that ozone is composed of O3. Is it possible to make an artificial ozone?

I don't think that's right at all.

The thinning of the ozone layer allows more ultraviolet light from the sun to reach the Earth's surface. This is harmful to life in various ways, including giving people a higher chance of contracting skin cancer, but it does almost nothing to heat up the planet, so far as I am aware.

Global climate change is caused by an increase in the so-called "greenhouse gases" principally carbon dioxide, CO2, rather than by a decrease of anything in the atmosphere.

On the point about synthesising ozone, yes we can make this, by electrolysis or electric discharges. But it won't help the climate problem.

Thank you for the reply.

I got your point about global warming and its causes and effects but Is ozone wont really help to lessen the hotness around the world? They say that ozone serves as umbrella to our planet Earth protecting us against the heat from the sun.

Please tell me more about synthesizing ozone through electric charges.

No, the "umbrella" ozone provides is against ultra-violet radiation, not against heat from the sun. There is a difference.

There is something about ozone production here: http://www.lenntech.com/library/ozone/generation/ozone-generation.htm

hello,

according to me

The increasing  magnitude of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released by the burning of fossil fuels, land clearing, agriculture, and other human projects, are believed to be the primary sources of the global warming that has occurred over the past 50 years.

Also, I remember from my athletics days, we do create ozone which stays in the bottom layer, then the effects are bad: breathing heavy much quicker see eg.: https://runnersconnect.net/running-injury-prevention/air-pollution-effects-on-runners/

Yes, ozone at ground level is unpleasant to breathe. It does have uses, though, for example in France I believe they use it in preference to chlorine for disinfecting public swimming pools.

It's easy to make ozone, but if you are thinking we can make enough to rebuild the ozone hole and somehow transport it into the stratoshere, no, and it would do no good.

I expect that's right. However the good news is that the ozone hole in the Antarctic is closing up very well.

The Montreal Protocol has been a great success story in international cooperation. I suspect the reason is that the manufacture of refrigerants is limited to a handful of major international chemical companies, so once they start responding to legislation with new products, society has tolerable solutions to the problem, the momentum rapidly builds and the problem starts to go away.

This is not the case of course with greenhouse emissions. That is a far tougher nut to crack: far more fragmented supply and far more economic impact on society. Though once again, commercial solutions are well on the way, now that business has some of right incentives to develop and invest. The UK now gets 25% of its electricity from renewables - something unthinkable even a decade ago.

The ozone layer is constantly being renewed by available oxygen, and UV-C from our sun. The Sun sends out UV-C radiation, and oxygen and nitrogen stop this. These molecules shatter upon absorption. Some of the oxygen atoms end up making ozone and thus the ozone layer reforms itself :)

I have never heard this. Can you cite evidence or examples?

I think when chemical materials arrive to Ecosystem it cause to destroy trees and plants, so amount of Greenhouse gases will be increased. I believe Greenhouse gas is enemy of the earth and ozone. it is just my opinion, no more.

You are confusing two completely different things. Greenhouse gases and climate change have nothing to do with depletion of the ozone layer.

Greenhouse gases such as CO2 and methane prevent heat from escaping from the Earth's atmosphere, leading to the risk of climate change.

Depletion of the ozone layer is caused by specific types of chemicals, often called CFCs and HCFCs, which were formerly used in refrigerators and in aerosol propellants. They have now been phased out. The effect of ozone depletion is to allow more harmful UV light from the sun to penetrate the atmosphere and cause damage to living organisms.

The ozone layer is now recovering.

The risk of climate change, however, continues to grow at an alarming rate and is probably the most serious environmental challenge facing humanity.
