The work you all are doing is really fascinating to me. I do have a few questions if you would indulge me and my ignorance of the subject. Is there an optimal temperature at which the pyrolitic process occurs? What is the reason for the addition of regular lump charcoal to the biochar? What is the optimal ratio of lump charcol to biochar? Would a regular wood chipper work for beaking up the lump charcoal and the biochar to a size that would be optimal for use? I'm looking forward to trying to make my own soon. I need to give the neighbors something new to talk about. Thanks for your help. Nathan

Hi Everyone, I'm new to this web site and snagged it with a biochar (terra preta) Google seach. I was shocked to even see people who were experimenting with it since I hadn't even heard of it till a Discovery Mag article this month. As I looked at all the other topics you all have an interest in, I can see we share common interests in a wide range of scientific and thought provoking topics. My formal training is in chemistry and microbiology but my interests are in everything. That's my into, can I post a question now please? Thanks. NathanR
