What Gives Exotic Heartwoods Their Unique Colors?

In exotic trees, what in particular gives their heartwoods their colors? Is it due to mineral or compounds being deposited into the cells is it from a mixture of chromophores. Could it be both? I would like to know why some are red, purple, black, and etc.

Exposure to light makes trees change color in their wood grain.
