The unit of Joule is kg*m2/s2.

Speed of light (c) is 299 792 458 m/s, rounded 3E+08 m/s.   Thus c*c is 9E+16 m2/s2.

Example: A mass (m) of 1kg is burned.  The substance is such that no residue is left.  Since E=mcc,  9E+16 Joule of energy is created.  However, when we burn 1kg of e.g. wood, experimentally we get about 7E+6 (or so) Joule of energy.  Where did the rest go?

But unfortunately they don't pay top dollar for the meat and potatoes of the proofs. Otherwise we could manufacture ballistic resonance in laser light from sunrays.

 

Hmmm... I have posted two topics regarding (1) black holes and light (2) E=mcc.  Which one are you actually referring to? :)

It doesn't "go" anywhere.  It just stays right where it was. "[tex]E= mc^2[/tex]"  is all the energy contained in matter including the energy that holds the atoms and even nuclei and protons and neutrons together.  "Chemical means", such as burning, only releases the energy holding molecules together.  In atomic bombs, the energy holding the nuclei together is release but the "deeper" energy, holding the protons and neutrons together, is not.
