Interesting article discussing possible new breakthoughs in Cancer treatment

What Will '09 Bring In Medicine?, Expert On Likely Directions In Treatment Of Obesity, Cancer, Infections, Brain Diseases, And Aging Skin - CBS News

this herbal one was interesting. It is an old Amerindian female herb used among other things for "women's problems"

Black Cohosh

The next is an herbal breakthrough, Black Cohosh, a plant in the buttercup family. It's been shown to stop the growth of some breast cancer cells, according to new research conducted by a French pharmaceutical company and funded in part by the National Institutes of health.

Researchers attribute the cancer-cell death to the agent triterpene glycoside, which is found in black cohosh extract.

Should you take it? Ask your doctor. Past research has shown that black cohosh can interfere with certain kinds of chemotherapy and has some adverse side effects. Plus, studies so far have been done only on mice.

SELENIUM ]has been talked about for years as a help in autoimmune disease in the Alternative (Complimentary?) Health field. You need a script for it in Australia (Why would they give it when it is not indicated for any disease under the Govt's Pharmacy scheme) You can buy it over the counter in England. The US- anyone know? It is found naturally in Brazil nuts.

I am told Australian soils have/contain very little selenium.

Abstract

Food systems need to produce enough of the essential trace element Se to provide regular adult intakes of at least 40 μg/d to support the maximal expression of the Se enzymes, and perhaps as much as 300 μg/d to reduce risks of cancer. Deprivation of Se is associated with impairments in antioxidant protection, redox regulation and energy production as consequences of suboptimal expression of one or more of the Se-containing enzymes.

These impairments may not cause deficiency signs in the classical sense, but instead contribute to health problems caused by physiological and environmental oxidative stresses and infections. At the same time, supranutritional intakes of Se, i.e. intakes greater than those required for selenocysteine enzyme expression, appear to reduce cancer risk.

The lower, nutritional, level is greater than the typical intakes of many people in several parts of the world, and few populations have intakes approaching the latter, supranutritional, level.

Accordingly, low Se status is likely to contribute to morbidity and mortality due to infectious as well as chronic diseases, and increasing Se intakes in all parts of the world can be expected to reduce cancer rates.

yes, you can purchase here in the states and it is typically sold in tablets of 100 to 200 mcg. It is important to note that taken high concentrations of selenium can be toxic

from Wikipedia

Toxicity

Although selenium is an essential trace element, it is toxic if taken in excess. Exceeding the Tolerable Upper Intake Level of 400 micrograms per day can lead to selenosis. Symptoms of selenosis include a garlic odor on the breath, gastrointestinal disorders, hair loss, sloughing of nails, fatigue, irritability and neurological damage. Extreme cases of selenosis can result in cirrhosis of the liver, pulmonary edema and death. Elemental selenium and most metallic selenides have relatively low toxicities because of their low bioavailability. By contrast, selenate and selenite are very toxic, the acute toxicity differs from the chronic toxicity which for selenite the chronic toxic dose for human beings is about 2400 to 3000 micrograms of selenium per day for a long time , and have an oxidant mode of action similar to that of arsenic trioxide

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, my computers eyes glased over, (froze up) when i tried to read all 11 pages.I'm not looking to get into an argument, so I'm making no claims, but you asked; Take 1 oz. of DMSO, the good stuff from Dr. Jacobs. Add 1 oz. of distilled H2o.Add 2o drops of food grade Hydrogen Peroxide.Apply topically to large areas after bath, (try it out first on a small area) and specifically to any moles or 'suspicious' growths. As I said, I'm not making any claims. I will say, 'if' it were to work, there would be NO financial incentive for anyone to do testing to prove its efficasy, or top manufacture/distribute it. After all, none of the ingredients are patentable, nor is the method of producing it.

Actually, add some EDTA, (to dissolve minerals in arterial plaque), Phosphatydyl Choline, for dissolving lipids, and Nattokinase, to reduce fibrin, aspirin and Capascine and Piperine. Now your addressing Cancer, heart attack/stroke, and Diabetes. And, because of the Piperine, these substances are not metabolised in the first pass thru the liver, meaning you get maximum benefit.Do your own research, to figure how much of each is appropriate.Try at your own risk, I'm not responsible Blah, blah, Blah.

Green Tea

Another study on green tea, also featured in this issue of the Journal of Nutrition, shows that drinking plentiful amounts of the beverage over many years may have a subtle influence in decreasing the risk of breast cancer. The study examined almost 7,000 women, ages 20 to 74, in China. The women were evaluated for breast cancer incidence and consumption of green tea.

Compared with nondrinkers, women who drank green tea had a slightly decreased risk of breast cancer. The benefit was strongest for women who drank the most green tea over longer periods of time.

Brazilian Acai/Açaí Berry

www.TopTropicals.com - rare plants for home and garden

(Plants available from this nursery. i wonder if it would grow and fruit indoors or in colder states than Florida?)

Voila! Susanne Talcott proved that the super antioxidants from the berry are absorbed and contribute to the health of a human body. Later studies showed another interesting effect of the berries: they show activity against cancer cell development.

Professor Stephen Talcott found that the antioxidant rich acai berry destroyed cultured human cancer cells. His findings, published in the 2006 Journal of Agricultural Food and Chemistry, showed up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested responded to the berry with self-destruction.

The study extracted six chemicals made from the acai fruit and pulp and made them into concentrations to be tested. When the samples were applied to leukemia cells for 24 hours, between 35 percent and 86 percent of the cells had died.

Scientists learn how cells reject cancer

Thursday, 05 February 2009

Multi-photon microscopy allowed the

researchers to track the rejection process

of cancer cells.

Researchers at the Centenary Institute in Sydney have discovered a molecule on the surface of immune cells which plays a critical role in cancer rejection.

Using advanced multi-photon microscopy, the scientists have tracked the migration of immune cells called T cells within tumours in experimental models, and found that the surface molecule (CD44) directly impacts whether a tumour progresses or is rejected by T cells.

Professor Wolfgang Weninger, Head of the Immune Imaging program at Centenary, says this discovery advances our knowledge of the immune processes at play in cancer.

“The immune system and cancer were first linked in the 1900s but it wasn’t until the 1980s that interactions between the immune system and cancer cells became a focus for medical researchers,” says Professor Weninger.

“We know that migration of T cells within tumours is very important for rejection but we didn’t know about how it worked. We found that this particular molecule regulates the navigation of T cells in tumours. In its absence, T cells are inhibited in migration and show a defect in their ability to reject

a tumour.”

Hi everyone

I've been studying cancer for many years. There's A LOT of interesting ideas going around, about causes and treatment, but since a few years one in particular has caught my interest.

A healthy cell has the ability to commit suicide, as it were, and they do. As soon as the cel chemistry goes wrong part of the cell's mitochondrial DNA will recognise this and in effect turn itself off. The problem with cancer cells is that they do noy use the cell's mitochondria. They create energy by a very process and their mitochondria are 'disabled', but, as a result, so is the 'suicide' switch.

Researchers form Canada have found a chemical compound that has been shown, in rats, to reactivate the mitochondria of cancer cells which causes them to terminate themselves. And, as far as known, this will work for any form of cancer. There is one major obsticle. The drug in question already exists and it cannot be patented, which mean it can be produced at almost no costs. The problem is that, although this has been know (and published in proffesional journals) for overthree years, its development is not going to result in a commercially interesting drug, simply because it cannot be patented and overpriced. The result is that over the past 3 years reearchers in question have not been able to raize the money needed for further trials, although they say they are ready to test it on humans.

I'm not allowed to post links but if you google

nature+cancer+drug+mitochondria

new+scientists+cancer+drug+mitochondria

there's a few interesting links right at the top

the researcher's also have an 'official' site at the University of Alberta

if you google alberta+dca its the top link in the search results

Note that this is not an 'alternative' cancer treament. The researchers are 'real scientists' working for a reputable university and their results have been published in respectable scientific journals.

Isn't it strange that this wasn't in the news, that cancer researchers and oncologists don't really show any interest, and considering the very many billions that go around in cancer research and treatment each year, isn't it just baffeling that these researchers can't get together the relatively little money they need to finish their research???? At their website they are actually solliciting the general public for donations!!!!

That's science for ya!!!!

Welcome to hypography, Rudy!

Researchers form Canada have found a chemical compound that has been shown, in rats, to reactivate the mitochondria of cancer cells which causes them to terminate themselves.
This is really interesting not-so-new news!

The compound is Dichloroacetic acid (DCA).

The consensus of the processes inventors and reviewers seems to be “study results are promising”.

And, as far as known, this will work for any form of cancer. There is one major obsticle.
Because DCA therapy targets a metabolic system common to most cells in the human body, mitochondrial metabolism, it should be “broad spectrum”, effective against many different cancers. However, experimental human trial therapies show that very large doses of DCA are required, and that such doses have serious side effects. The most serious sides effects appears to be causing permanent nerve damage and liver cancer.

It may be possible to use other drugs and vitamins to control DCA side effects, and to stop and restart giving DCA in a way that minimizes side effects while still curing cancer. However, it doesn’t appear that it will be possible to develop a “take it an get cured” DCA-using cancer therapy. Rather, like existing cancer therapies, successful DCA therapy will require close monitoring, expert decisions, and luck.

Medicor Cancer Centers of Toronto, ON Canada, a commercial medical practice, has with the permission of patients made some case information, such as this case study of the treatment of mesothelioma, a difficult-to-treat, cancer, available at their website. Although not a refereed journal (Medicor clinicians have chosen not to publish in journals) their case studies give an idea of what DCA therapy is like, and the challenges that remain to improving it, should it prove effective. It’s important to note that DCA therapy has not yet been proven to actually cure cancer, either in humans or animals.

the researcher's also have an 'official' site at the University of Alberta
Here is a link to this site, Official University of Alberta DCA Site.
Note that this is not an 'alternative' cancer treament. The researchers are 'real scientists' working for a reputable university and their results have been published in respectable scientific journals.
As best I can tell, Bonnet and colleagues at the U or Alberta and Ontario have published a single journal article, “A Mitochondria-K+ Channel Axis Is Suppressed in Cancer and Its Normalization Promotes Apoptosis and Inhibits Cancer Growth” (Cancer Cell 1/2007)

According to this NIH webpage, a phase II human clinical trial, “The Safety and Efficacy of DCA for the Treatment of Brain Cancer” was approved 10/2007, and is currently recruiting participants. It is designed to have 50 participants.

The legal and financial issues around DCA cancer therapy are interesting.

While DCA (technically, DCA salts in water solution) can’t be patent, its use as a cancer treatment, and techniques for using it, can and have been patented by Michelakis and Archer of U or Alberta. However, their patent is a weaker “provisional” patent. This CTV.ca article has more information on these details.

Isn't it strange that this wasn't in the news, that cancer researchers and oncologists don't really show any interest, and considering the very many billions that go around in cancer research and treatment each year, isn't it just baffeling that these researchers can't get together the relatively little money they need to finish their research????
I think clinicians and businesses are being cautious about DCA cancer therapies, because it’s not clear what cancers it may be effective against, or if its side effects may be worse than current therapies. Especially in the US (my country), medical liability can be severe, so before a clinician, hospital, HMO or insurance company representative gives his or her approval to such a therapy to thousands of patients, they must be assured that these patients or their families will not be able to successfully sue if the therapy fails. Failure to exercise this caution can result in a medical practice, hospital, or clinic going out of business.

Hi CraigD

Thank's, that was very informative.

The reason I'm exited about the development is the principle of how it works. I know (from private correspondence) that other researchers are investigating the possibility of searching for other compounds with similar efects on mitochondria in the hope of finding one that is less dangerous (and, of course, one they can patent and make lots of money with).

Another possibility is the development of methods in which the drug is administered locally. Perhaps using implants similar to those that are now used to administer pain-killers inside the body, close to the place where the pain originates, in people with chronic pain. This would take some of the pressure of the rest of the body with regard to the side effects.

The ideal of cancer research has always been to find something that is deadly only to cancer cells, but not healthy cells. I think we can all agree that although chemo and radiation therapy meet that criteria in principle, they are far from ideal. In the long run, the realization that the cell itself has such a mechanism that can be used to fight the disease has to be a good development.

Rudi

Holy Basil Holds The Key To Anti-Ageing

Holy basil, (Latin name Ocimum sanctum), is a close relative of the herb commonly used in Western cooking. Native to India, its extract has long been used in the ancient system of Ayurvedic medicine practiced in India and other parts of Asia as a rejuvenation drug, to promote a youthful state of physical and mental health.

In the first formal study of the herb, pharmacy researchers found that holy basil extract was effective at actively searching for and eliminating harmful molecules and protecting against damage caused by some free radicals in key organs such as the heart, liver and brain.

The researchers, led by Dr Vaibhav Shinde from Poona College of Pharmacy, Maharashtra, India, studied the herb for anti-oxidant and anti-ageing properties.

Dr Shinde said: "The study validates the traditional use of herb as a youth-promoting substance in the Ayurvedic system of medicine. It also helps describe how the herb acts at a cellular level."

Basil Holds The Key To Anti-Ageing

Indian monks (Buddhist?) I knew used it to treat cancer.

they called it "Tulsi"

It always smelled to me like Indian Incense, overpowering if you crushed a bunch near you.

Wouldn't it taste a little like drinking perfume?
