New Theory Of How Viruses May Contribute To Cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2007) — A new study suggests that viruses may contribute to cancer by causing excessive death to normal cells while promoting the growth of surviving cells with cancerous traits. Viruses may act as forces of natural selection by wiping out normal cells that support the replication of viruses and leaving behind those cells that have acquired defects in their circuitry. When this process is repeated over and over, cancer can develop say study authors, led by Preet M. Chaudhary, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

. . . .

Consequently, similar to the role played by natural selection during evolution, excessive cell death, rather than its absence, may be a defining force that drives the initial emergence of cancer," said Dr. Chaudhary. He named this model the Phoenix Paradigm in which cancer theoretically arises out of the ashes of dead cells.

. . .

Their findings are published by Public Library of Science in the Oct. 24 issue of PLoS One.

Cancer: The facts

One in three of us will be diagnosed with cancer during our life.

The disease tends to affect older people - but can strike at any time.

Excluding certain skin cancers, there were more than 270,000 new cases of the disease in 2001 - and the rate is increasing by about 1% a year.

Some cancer, such as breast, are becoming more common, while new cases of lung cancer fall away due to the drop in the number of smokers.

However, while the overall number of new cancers is not falling, the good news is that successful treatment rates for many of the most common types are improving rapidly.

But no one has really bitten the bullet. ie

What cures it?

What stops it?

I don’t think it’s possible to “bite the bullet” on the subject of cancer, or other disease. Biting the bullet implies bearing a painful experience to complete a brief, well-defined task. Treating cancer is none of these, other than often – but not always - painful.
Yes i know there are heaps of 'cancer' threads on Hi!Pog.
There are many threads here at hypography, and many times more discussion in the general and medical community at large, because there are many kinds of cancer and cancer treatments. It’s not realistic to expect all of the discussion can be condensed into a single thread.

It’s important to understand that the term “cancer” is a very broad, symptomatic definition, not a specific disease. Thus, asking “what cures cancer?” is similar to asking “what fixes cars that won’t start?” In most cases, a lot of discussion must follow, and to be effective, needs to narrow itself to a particular patient/car.

Modern medicine? Ancient medicine? The gauntlet is thrown down
I don’t think this is much of a contest. The question is somewhat analogous to “which were better – modern boats, or ancient?”

By any practical, statistically valid approach, modern medicine is much more effective than ancient in curing cancer. Within a single human lifetime, chances of untimely death following timely treatment have decreased from nearly 100% to nearly 0% for certain kinds of cancer.

Here, to start, is why the Concord plane can cure cancer…
LOL!

Of course, the Concord can’t cure cancer (or do much of anything these days but sit around in museums :)). The ABC TheScienceShow transcript just presents engineer Constantin Coussios’s account of how he was able to apply his work on reducing the sound intensity of the Concord – a bad thing – to increasing the sound intensity of ultrasound generators to levels that can be used to destroy tissue – a potentially useful thing.

“Ultrasound ablation” is becoming an increasingly popular therapy, particularly with non-malignant but unpleasant tumors (eg: uterine fibroids) that previously would have been left untreated because possible surgical complications posed a greater risk than leaving them untreated, or was too expensive. Big posters advertising such treatments have been appearing recently on my local busses and trains.

Engineering is one of those neat fields where ideas commonly cross disciplines, not always from the mechanical to the medical. These days, mechanics rarely disassemble a jet engine before probing it with a fiber-optic probe essentially identical to the kind used in laparoscopic surgery.

Neat stuff Craig.

I was recently given this book after being diagnosed with Giardia. The book claims that ALL cancers are caused by parasites. It is quite fascinating once you start to look into it. After I read some of this book I found some medical journal articles weeks later that indicated that a cancer was caused by a parasite. (sorry, I don't remember where I saw them, but if I find them again, I'll post some links)

in 1990 Dr. Clark discovered the true cause of cancer. The cause is a certain parasite, for which I have found evidence in every cancer case regardless of the type of cancer. So lung cancer is not caused by smoking, colon cancer is not caused by a low roughage diet, breast cancer is not caused by a fatty diet, retinal blastoma is not caused b y a rare gene, and pancreatic cancer is not caused by alcohol consumption. Although these are all contributing factors, they are not THE cause. Once the true cause was found the cure became obvious. but would it work? I set a goal of 100 cases to be cured of cancer before publishing my findings. That mark was passed in December, 1992. the discovery of the cause and cure of all cancers has stood the test of time and here it is!

And it gets more bizzarre...

The book gives schematics for building your own parasite "zapper".

Here's a review of her book from the amazon link above:

Curious (and not a little angry), I checked on Quackwatch, a website dedicated to debunking medical frauds. Sure enough, Hulda Clark has an entire section devoted to her. Before you buy one of her books, at least read what others have had to say. Understand that, for her to be correct, literally every physician and nurse you have every met would have to be part of a conspiracy to hide this truth. If a few zaps of electricity could cure cancer, then literally every drug company, every family doctor, every Nobel prize winner for the past half-century would need to be in on the lie. Or, if that seems a bit much, it could be the Hulda Clark is a quack. Ask yourself which seems more likely.

I still plan on reading some more of it, but it seems that, as Craig said, it is not so simple a problem. :)

There are a lot of strange weird and wonderful cancer 'cures'

It would be great to collect them all here and let people make their own judgements.

Just last night, I had dinner with friends who told me about their brush with skin cancer.

MY Male Friend had a strange spot on his back that seemed to be changing.

My Female Fiend (partner of said male) was concerned and despite the reluctant, skin caner specialist asked for a biopsy.

It turned out to be a surprising (to the Doc) malignant tumour

(My female friend is a Taurean, female Witch with pre-cognition)

Here is something of interest

Melanoma Tumors Carry Enemy Within, Suggesting New Treatment Strategy

ScienceDaily (Nov. 24, 2007) — University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers have discovered that bortezomib, a promising cancer drug, is able to strike a blow against melanoma tumor cells by revving up the action of a cancer-promoting gene.

They say the laboratory-based findings suggest a novel treatment strategy that might someday prove effective against many types of cancer: Push cancer cells into overdrive, so that they self-destruct.

Flavonoid-rich Diet Helps Women Decrease Risk Of Ovarian Cancer

ScienceDaily (Nov. 20, 2007) — New research out of the Channing Laboratory at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) reports that frequent consumption of foods containing the flavonoid kaempferol, including nonherbal tea and broccoli, was associated with a reduced risk of ovarian cancer.

The researchers also found a decreased risk in women who consumed large amounts of the flavonoid luteolin, which is found in foods such as carrots, peppers, and cabbage.

Having recently been through this with my hubby(2 surgeries this year) and ongoing with my sister(GIST 5 yrs now) and bro-in-law going thru courses of chemo now(lung/neck/prostate). I have lost both grandmothers, 3 uncles and an aunt who has breast cancer now, so I am KEENLY interested in all things to reduce chances of getting it, act wisely if diagnosed and comfort those who have it. Seems a full time job at times.

I am the only alternative advocate in the family. Sometimes I am tolerated when I preach the whole foods and proper hydration practices that I have made a way of life. I am the poster chilld for alternative health care in my family with sufficient enough change in me for even the most hardened denier to back down. But I still wonder is the big C slowly creeping up on me?? only time will tell...

This is a quote that I read early on in my quest to clean up MY act, so far as nutrional habits go.

There is a basic cause for disease and this is simply malnutrition. Poor food, poor digestion, poor assimilation, poor utilization, poor elimination. Add stress to this picture and you will see how a wonderful and complex mechanism designed by the Creator... can be brutally destroyed by man's inventions.

So, I started there and examined my diet, my activities, my relationships etc. Hopefully in time. But the search goes on for things that might help those who have not been cursed with the investigative gene and the experimental spirit nor blessed with the time to do it.

Another friend who had breast cancer three years ago was put on a bio-dynamic, organic diet by her oncologist.(!)

Skin clinics give free checks here, although they would not have picked up my friend's skin cancer unless his wife had a 'bad' feeling' about it and therefore insisted on a biopsy.

The doc was very surprised that it came back malignant; she wasn't.

Researchers at the University of Kentucky have created a cancer resistant mouse!

Although identifying a cancer-resistant gene is by no means a direct cure, the mechanisms behind the gene's ability to kill tumerous cells and leave healthy cells intact could lead to a better understanding of cancer-specific cell terminations.

A cancer resistant mouse is a great start.

So does the "tumor-suppressor gene called "Par-4" in the prostate" kill all cancers?

It it only in men? I note it is in other cells too. Is it mainly in the prostate? How come so many men get prostrate cancer?

Can it be encourages or "turned on" in any way, either by herbs, drugs or anything else? Does it decrease activity with age?

Gene therapy here we come. A very exciting breakthrough.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Just three servings a month of raw broccoli or cabbage can reduce the risk of bladder cancer by as much as 40 percent, researchers reported this week.

. . .

These foods are rich in compounds called isothiocyanates, which are known to lower cancer risk.

. . .

"Cooking can reduce 60 to 90 percent of ITCs, (isothiocyanates)," Dr. Li Tang, who led the study, said in a statement.

Researchers present new data that demonstrate how diets full of raw vegetables --particularly broccoli sprouts -- and black raspberries could prevent or slow the growth of some common forms of cancer.

Black raspberries modulate markers of oxidative stress in patients with Barrett's esophagus

Black raspberries may protect against esophageal cancer by reducing oxidative stress in patients with Barrett's esophagus (BE), a pre-cancerous condition that usually arises due to gastroesophageal reflux disease, report researchers at The Ohio State University.

According to the researchers, BE patients have a 30- to 40-fold increased risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), the fastest growing cancer in terms of incidence in the United States. EAC is a deadly cancer with a 15 percent five-year survival rate; an estimated 14,000 people will die from esophageal cancer in the U.S. in 2007. Moreover, a number of treatment options are available to BE patients for symptom relief, researchers say, but none has proven curative or eliminated the risk of cancer progression.

Your Immune System Can Keep Cancer Dormant

New research has shown for the first time that the human immune system can stop the growth of a cancerous tumor without actually killing it. These results help explain why some tumors suddenly stop growing and go into a long period of dormancy.

The study's authors call this cancer-suppressing state “equilibrium.” During equilibrium, the immune system decreases the cancer's ability to grow, and kills some cancerous cells, although not enough to eliminate or shrink the tumor.

Researchers injected mice with small doses of a chemical carcinogen and observed those who developed small, stable masses at the site of the injections. When certain components of the animals' immune systems were disabled, the growths became full-blown cancers. This suggests that the immune system had been holding the tumors in check.

Speaking about cancer is like we talk about “who was first the egg or the chicken “ is the same long and interminable discussion.

There are cancers like breast or colon cancers, one of the hematological proliferations with a higher survival.( we can’t say the same thing about brain or pancreatic cancers).

What determinate cancer?

1.hereditary ( colon cancer)

2.genes (proto-oncogenes and many others )

3. viruses as human papillomavirus responsible for the cervical cancer (there is a vaccine for it)

Treatment is specific for each kind of cancer .

Holy Grail' of treatments expected within two years

Article from: The Sunday Mail (Qld

Daryl Passmore

December 16, 2007 12:00am

QUEENSLAND scientists expect to start clinical trials within two years on what has been described as the "Holy Grail" of cancer treatments.

Dr Ming Wei from the University of Queensland Department of Medicine says he is "very confident" of success in developing the treatment, which uses bacteria from kangaroos to attack tumours.

The world-first therapy could save millions of lives each year.

Professor Ian Frazer, who developed a cervical cancer vaccine, has hailed the work of his Queensland colleagues.

"The Holy Grail of cancer treatments is to come up with treatments which can deal with the tumours without harming the patient," he said.

Starting next month, Dr Wei will lead a team of 10 scientists genetically modifying a common bacterium from kangaroos to develop a product that is expected to be effective in combating up to 90 per cent of cancers.
