From Zend.com:

CUPERTINO, CA - January 24, 2005 - Zend Technologies, Inc., creator and ongoing innovator of PHP, products and services supporting the development, deployment and management of PHP-based applications, today announced it has received strategic investments from both Intel Capital and SAP Ventures, a division of SAP AG. Zend will work with both companies to continue the momentum of open source and PHP solutions for business-critical web applications in enterprise environments. Terms of the investments were not disclosed.

"As the meteoric growth of PHP continues, it is clear that it has become a relevant and significant development language," said Stephen McClure, program vice president in IDC's Software Research Group. "Any corporation building enterprise-grade applications would be wise to consider the open source development platform as a strong competitor to traditional commercial solutions."

Zend, the creator of PHP and the open-source Zend Engine, is committed to working with the PHP community to continue to enhance and extend the capabilities of PHP. The company is also focused on driving PHP to the enterprise by delivering infrastructure products and services for business-critical, dynamic Web applications. Zend offers next-generation products and services necessary for enterprise-class PHP applications, ensuring reliability, scalability and interoperability.

"Companies can use PHP to develop custom applications and commercial web-based applications, such as an airline e-ticketing system," said Will Swope, vice president and general manager of Intel's Software and Solutions Group. "We're investing in companies that provide robust tools for the open source and PHP developer communities, letting enterprises deploy mission critical PHP applications in several weeks, instead of months. Intel will work with Zend to help the company optimize its PHP solution for use across Intel processor-based PCs and servers."

"Strategic investments from Intel Capital and SAP Ventures will be used to build a commercial infrastructure to support PHP in the enterprise, further strengthening both the momentum PHP has and Zend's position as the PHP leader," said Doron Gerstel, President and CEO, Zend Technologies. "Our ongoing development of a solid ecosystem surrounding PHP makes it enterprise grade. Working with Intel and SAP will make it even stronger."

Good for them, I'm sure Lerdoff was not expecting this as he battles on with software pattents!

Zend is a superior platform to anything else in its class, PHP is numerous times more secure than ASP and Java, even though it is a scripting language, and it still runs faster and better than the compiled ones... PHP and others is comparable to Apache and other web servers, they are both open-source, secure, small, fast, free and have a really huge following that grows on a daily. I think it is great that PHP was finally proven to be a better large corporate website language than the others, it's been that way for a while, but corporations are not eager to test the new, they stick with what they know, not whats better. It is like microsoft and open-source models, (if you want me to derive those, just post, and i'll do it with reasoning and so forth) it is all an investment for better, but people who live by "now" only see losses in profit, and people who see "tomorrow" are very rare and hard to get information from...
