I've never known anyone to be so fanatical about Australia online -- I love it! :)

The whole Dalai Lama fiasco was pretty poor. It's worrying that our leaders would almost rather pander to the Chinese than their own populace. At least common sense won out in the end.

I agree, wimps!

Rudd wants to practice his Chinese.

Has anyone seen this anywhere?

A painting worth an estimated $1.3 million has "disappeared" from a wall of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, in what is expected to be the biggest Australian art heist since the early 1990s.

The missing painting is the 17th century self-portrait A Cavalier, by Dutch master Frans van Mieris I, and some media reports claim at least five other paintings are missing from the gallery.

. .UPDATE : The painting is now believed to have been stolen when the gallery was open to the public, and the thief was able to :

flee unnoticed with it after "expertly removing it from its mounting", police said today.

Police say the thief struck between 10am and 12.30pm, when the gallery would have been open to visitors.

Gallery spokeswoman Susanne Briggs said the entire work – including the timber frame – had been carefully unscrewed from the wall.

Ozzies lurve culture.

Bonsai out of the loop

Don't let anybody tell you that prime minister John Howard isn't on top of what's going on in Iraq, particularly when it comes to the final round of deployments in the US troop "surge" that is supposed to rein in all the death and destruction :

Mr Howard said "evidence about the success so far of the surge is mixed", but he had not given up hope.

"The surge has not reached its peak and it won't reach its peak for some weeks yet," he said.

According to the US Defence Department, who'd you expect to know the facts :

The full contingent of new U.S. forces being sent to Iraq -- what military leaders call a "surge" of troops to improve security and stability in the capital -- was completed by Friday, with 28,500 additional troops now posted in the country, a U.S. military spokesman said.

Howard often cites his friendship with President Bush, and his contact with the inner circle of the White House, as being evident of how the Bush administration cherishes Australia's troop commitment to the Iraq War. Clearly, they're not getting on the phone to him as often as they used to.

The Orstrahyun

But ask Howard's boys about the lies and distortions that led to the Iraq War, the AWB scandal, or why they didn't tell the voters about Workchoices before the 2004 elections and they will tell you we mustn't dwell in the past, "let's look to the future".

But what is the Howard future? Where is it? All they talk about is the past. Thirty years ago, 12 years ago, nine months ago.

90% of Australians couldn't give a tinkers about the 'Culture Wars'. Most don't even know what it is, or what it is supposed to be a war over. They are concerned about climate change and how much their children are going to be paid, and what sort of conditions they might have to work under, because these are issues about what awaits us in the future.

Australians want to look to the future, and in many ways we can't wait to get there. The fact that Australia's boom economy is based around a two thousand year old power source and we have internet speeds that are laughed at by nine year old kids in South Korea are two examples of how far behind we are in a world rapidly speeding up, and moving ahead. We know we are being left behind, and it's making us edgy.

But we don't get much in the way of vision statements or inspirational future dreaming from the federal government. All we hear about is how they are desperately trying to patch up the holes in all the promises they made, but never delivered on, while their bulldogs shout at us from Parliament via the evening news about how we've "never had it so good."

While many Australian journalists and opinion writers pretend to be mystified as to why the Labor Party remains so high in the polls, long after the Rudd honeymoon was supposed to end and Howard Corp. was to get their supposedly long overdue surge, Australians are anything but confused.

They want to know what the future holds. They want to know what's coming, and not just how good their broadband may or may not be in three years time. They want to feel like somebody is making the big plans, dreaming the big dreams and thinking of the long-term future, not just how to win the next election.

Don't tell me what you've done, Mr Howard. Tell me what kind of Australia we will be living in in ten years time, in twenty years time, in fifty years time.

An excellent Australian( pronounced orstrahyun) Blog if you want to know more;-

Parched Australia plans giant desalination plant

SYDNEY, June 19 (Reuters) - Australia is planning to build one of the world's largest desalination plants as part of a $4.9 billion ($4 billion) programme to provide drinking water to the nation's second-largest city Melbourne.

The plan, announced Tuesday, followed a warning from environmental group WWF that removing salt from sea water to overcome a worldwide shortage of drinking water could end up worsening the crisis.

The Victorian state government said water bills for consumers could double to fund the A$3.1 billion plant planned for Wonthaggi, south-east of Melbourne. It also plans another A$1 billion expanding pipelines and the city's water grid.

The plan was part of a drought-proofing package to generate 150 billion litres of drinking water annually -- about one-third of Melbourne's current consumption, Australian Associated Press (AAP) reported.

Much of southern Australia has been in the grip of the worst drought in living memory and many reservoirs feeding major cities and towns are at alarmingly low levels. Water restrictions are widespread.

Australia to buy Spanish warships

CANBERRA - Australia is to buy three Spanish designed warships and two large Spanish landing ships, Prime Minister John Howard announced today.

Mr Howard said the navy would be equipped with three Navantia F100 air warfare destroyers worth a total of A$8 billion ($9.02 billion).

To be Australia's most advanced and expensive warships, they will enter service from 2013.

And in another win for Spain, the Australian navy will be equipped with two 27,000 tonne Navantia landing ships at a cost of about A$3 billion

U.S., Australia Launch War Games

Associated Press | June 19, 2007

SYDNEY, Australia - Australia and the United States launched their biggest joint war games Monday, with 27,500 troops backed by a U.S. aircraft carrier engaging in exercises aimed at consolidating the allies' military dominance in the Asia Pacific region.

The biennial Talisman Sabre exercise pits 20,000 U.S. troops and 7,500 Australian forces against two fictional enemies - the Kamarians and Musorians - in a variety of land and sea-based scenarios designed to test their skills in combat, peacekeeping and humanitarian relief efforts.

The exercise, which runs until July 2, will also include 10 U.S. ships, 20 Australian ships and 125 aircraft operating off the coast of Rockhampton in northeastern Queensland state.

"The United States and Australia have a long-standing relationship ... we share the same values and interests. Foremost among those interests is the stability and security of the Asia-Pacific region," U.S. Vice Admiral Doug Crowder told reporters on board the USS Blue Ridge in Sydney.

"Therefore it is very important that our militaries train together to carry out the types of missions our governments may call upon us to execute to ensure regional security and stability," he said.

The exercise comes as the United States and Japan step up efforts to build a joint missile defense system in Asia, partly as a bulwark against regional threats, such as a nuclear-armed North Korea.

Australia, a steadfast U.S. ally that maintains around 2,000 troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, is studying whether to participate in the defense shield, Defense Minister Brendan Nelson said this month.

What a waste of money..

DeSal plants may be needed now, but a carefully laid plan a few years back could have avoided the need. The question is, can they be built soon enough?

I would also like to know what enviromental impacts this has, converting large amounts of water to fresh - I guess its just a literal drop in ocean..

Seriously our piddly little army doesnt stand a chance if korea, china, japan or america wanted to invade - its just there for looks and so we can be seen to 'support' other countries in wars. I think we would be better off without it - its not lazy, but minding our own business

me too

What do you think of this? sent it to Dr. Karl but he is too busy

m

I talked to a Guy at a recent conference who worked for a big power Station up north.

I ran the "de-sal at power plant" idea by him and he thought it was a good idea.

Power Stations, as you know, need to keep a base load going.

At night, he said, they need to gradually "step down" their massive generators. CO2 wise, this is not very efficient use of the energy produced by burning the coal. A lot of energy is wasted gradually stepping down the massive generators over a period of hours.

Sometimes they need to expend a lot of energy going to get an extra power station on line to cope with peak demand.

He also said that seawater used for cooling is warmed to 50C anyway, so it is not a lot more to get to 101C.

I suppose it is a matter of economics, perhaps of perception, perhaps of conservative thinking; but the Professor's new technology (below) looks good.

What do you think?

Professor Discovers Better Way To Desalinate Water

Science Daily — Chemical engineer Kamalesh Sirkar, PhD, a distinguished professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and an expert in membrane separation technology, is leading a team of researchers to develop a breakthrough method to desalinate water. Sirkar, who holds more than 20 patents in the field of membrane separation, said that using his technology, engineers will be able to recover water from brines with the highest salt concentrations. The Bureau of Reclamation in the Department of Interior is funding the project.

Kamalesh K. Sirkar, PhD, is a distinguished professor of chemical engineering and the sponsored chair for membrane separations and the director for the Center for Membrane Technologies at New Jersey Institute of Technology.

"Our process will work especially well with brines holding salt concentrations above 5.5 percent," Sirkar said. Currently, 5.5 percent is the highest percentage of salt in brine that can be treated using reverse osmosis.

"We especially like our new process because we can fuel it with low grade, inexpensive waste heat," Sirkar said. "Cheap heat costs less, but can heat brine efficiently."

It would be good if he is a true scientist and listens to reason and gives a good unbias opinion to those that matter..

This draconian outrage has shaken Australia awake

John Howard's Aboriginal plan has rebounded, finally recommencing the debate about our nation's historic wound

Richard Flanagan

Thursday June 28, 2007

The Guardian

Among his many achievements, John Howard is sometimes credited with the invention of "dog whistling" politics - whereby, without any objectionable or racist idea being directly stated, the dog hears exactly the message meant.

Whatever the truth of such claims, throughout his long career the Australian prime minister has left himself open to the accusation of racism. From questioning Asian immigration in the 1980s to initially welcoming the racist comments of the far-right MP Pauline Hanson, Howard was widely perceived to play the race card to great effect.

Under Howard, federal government support for black Australia slowly dried up. Services were slashed, native title restricted. By 2000 official figures revealed that more than 41% of indigenous women and 50% of indigenous men could expect to die before they reached 50. Still nothing was done. The condition of many Aboriginal communities - frequently and accurately described as third world - grew only worse. The dreamtime was a grog-ridden nightmare. In the last few years black leaders, government agencies and welfare bodies have been talking of a growing crisis in traditional communities and calling for immediate action. But not until last week did Howard, less than six months out from an election and facing polls pointing to, in his own words, "electoral annihilation", discover this "national emergency".

The grounding of the Pasha Bulker near the entrance to Newcastle Harbour (the biggest coal loading port in the world) has been a boon to Newcastle Tourism.

Thousands of people are swarming there causing traffic chaos and a boon to mobile food sellers and local cafes.

People are driving 1,000 K from interstate. (just shows you how bad TV is)

Two cables attached to tugs broke last night so it is still there.(The pash weighs 32,000 tons-empty)

Must be a lot of relieved local business owners in Newcastle.

Another attempt will be made to-night 29 June 12 hours time

Why just the NT when he has the constitutional right to take over ALL states aboriginal affairs. Why are NT kid more at risk?

From what I understand the Federal Government has control over the NT, and Howard is encouraging the state leaders to tackle this problem in their own states.

I was glad to hear that something was being done about the aborigines' state of living. Enough is enough. Sure we came in and took over their land, but we've said we're sorry and now it's time for them to accept the situation and make the best out of it.

There is no reason for them to be virtually living in poverty and abusing each other and glue/alcohol. The aborigines are saying that Howard is being racist, but they've shown they can't be left to care for themselves. I'm fed up with seeing drunk aborigines staggering around Adelaide, begging for money and being abusive. There is so much government support available for them and all they have to do is take it. I think this clean-up program is a good use of our money, and if something isn't done about it now then it'll just get worse.

Hello Michaelangelica,

You might remember that in the very early stages there was talk about how John Howard was prepared to do unconstitutional things to help the poor Australian Aboriginals (without saying sorry).

Considering that the Northern Territory has not yet reached statehood, the federal government (read PM) operates in much the same way as our state Governors acted prior to the introduction of the (as yet unratified by the people of Australia via majority yes votes in a referendum) Australia act 1986, i.e. the governor was not a mere puppet of the government and could withold or disallow legislation (like the NT Euthanasia bill that was knocked on the head by the Federal government).

So now we have a coalition of the willing (state premiers) who (almost) all donate 10 police officers to prop up the federal governments non constitutional (constitutional prior to 1986) behaviour in a way that appears constitutional (under the post 1986 regime) ???

This twisted and convoluted process only seems to further support the federal treasurer, Peter Costello, in his statement on national TV (ACA) several years ago that 'the constitution is broken'. The federal government is behaving as if the states are the only legitimate constitutional authorities in Australia through their 'joint' actions.

It's not surprising that Johnnie and Kevvie don't want prince William as an Australian Governor General, because there would be no certainty that he would act as a rubber stamp for either of them.

William as GG!! LOL

If we are stupid enough to accept that I'm moving OS - NZ or Tasmania !

The Woman's Week opps monthly would love it:)

Constitutionally the Federal Government has power over All Aboriginal Affairs in All States.

Being poor and homeless is not an Aboriginal franchise.

Howard is a racist, (& an elitist) thats what "dog-whistle politics" is all about.

Anyone hear anything about the massive new USA/OZ NT Airbase? (Now ready to go). Because of the size of the military cargo planes this may be the only Oz airbase that can take them. But Why?

Anyone hear any protest about the new Australia Card?

Where is the GW debate up to?
