  1. I wrote the following about this great modern historical fiction writer and place my post in this sub-section, FYI.-Ron Price, Australia ---------------------------------------- THANKING E.L. DOCTOROW Part 1: The acclaimed American novelist and playwright E. L. Doctorow has given writers like myself many writing tips. He died two weeks ago, on 21 July 2015, in Manhattan at the age of 84 due to complications from lung cancer. I write the following out of appreciation for a writer who, for the most part, remained for out on the periphery of my reading experience in the last 60 years. I have f
  2. If you do not accept the evidence provided by the Baha'i Faith, you would not be able to accept the evidence for the existence of WW2, the moon landing, or the major events of modern history. The facts of the Baha'i Faith fall into the same category as other events in modern history. You can choose to ignore them, any or all of them, but that does not prove they did not exist. As you say, belief and knowledge are two different things.-Ron
  3. What sort of evidence are you looking for, Moontanman. If it is not historical factuality, what are you looking for that you would call evidence?-Ron
  4. Waugh saw this novel, Brideshead Revisited, as his magnum opus but, on reading it later in life, he found what he called its "rhetorical and ornamental language.....distasteful."3 Readers with the interest in this film and this novel should surf-about on Wikipedia and other internet sources for all sorts of bits-and-pieces of information and analysis.-Ron Price with thanks to 1Martin Stannard, "Evelyn Arthur St John Waugh(1903–66),” Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, online edition, 2007; 2Evelyn Waugh: The Early Years 1903-1939, and Evelyn Waugh: The Later Years 1939-1966, W.W. Norton
  5. Evelyn Waugh write from his Catholic position.-Ron Revisiting Brideshead was televised last night.1 I had seen this 11 part series on television back in the 1980s or early 1990s after it first came out in 1981. I had not read the novel, Brideshead Revisited, The Sacred & Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder by English writer Evelyn Waugh which was first published in 1945. In 2015 I had the pleasure of seeing the 2008 film version.2 I wrote about the TV series and the film after I had retired from my 50 year life-experience as a student and in paid employment, 1949-1999, and after I
  6. The notion of physical evidence, Moontanman, in relation to a religion is covered within the topic of historicity. Historicity is the historical actuality of persons and events, meaning the quality of being part of history as opposed to being a historical myth, legend, or fiction. Historicity focuses on the truth value of knowledge claims about the past (denoting historical actuality, authenticity, and factuality). The historicity of a claim about the past is its factual status. The Baha'i Faith has more historical actuality than all the old religions since it began in the 19th century. You ca
  7. Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence. Its common elements are pitch which governs melody and harmony, rhythm and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. The word derives from a Greek word which, when translated, means "art of the Muses." Although this sub-section of my website is part of popular culture, I deal on this webpage with music in its totality: all forms, all cultures and the history of music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music all vary according to cul
  8. I have been invited to say a few things about the Baha'i Faith in this theology forum. To save me reinventing the wheel, so to speak, I'll post a few words from Wikipedia which provides a good start for readers. The Bahá'í Faith is a monotheistic religion which emphasizes the spiritual unity of all humankind. Three core principles establish a basis for Bahá'í teachings and doctrine: the unity of God, that there is only one God who is the source of all creation; the unity of religion, that all major religions have the same spiritual source and come from the same God; and the unity of humanity,
  9. ELYSIUM Part 1: Elysium is a 2013 American dystopian science fiction action thriller film. It was written, directed, and co-produced by Neill Blomkamp, and starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Alice Braga and Sharlto Copley. It was released on 9 August 2013, in both conventional and IMAX Digital theaters; I saw the film on TV on 9 July 2015 here in Australia. In my 16 years of retirement from a 50 year student and paid employment life, 1949 to 1999, I have found that, if I wait, the movies and DVDs that come onto the market eventually turn-up on television. This film takes place on both a
  10. After more than 3 years, I offer my belated apologies for this response. Thanks to Wikipedia we can say that "In psychology, cognitive dissonance is the mental stress or discomfort experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at the same time, or is confronted by new information that conflicts with existing beliefs, ideas, or values." for more go to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance
  11. APOLOGETICS: AN OVERVIEW Part 1: Since there are so many questions raised and issues discussed concerning people’s basic assumptions about life, about their philosophy, about their religious beliefs, indeed, about their very approach to reality and the way their society goes about organizing things, it seemed like a useful exercise, useful at least to me and hopefully to some others at this site, to say a few things about: My Position and Beliefs: My Religion. I do this at this site and dozens of other sites on the internet and I use this post as an opening note. I hope to solicit response
  12. I just saw the above post after more than 3 years. Thanks for letting me know about that "theological forum".-Ron
  13. JOHN MALKOVICH Part 1: Being John Malkovich was an American dramedy fantasy which opened in October 1999 just as I was retiring after a 50 year student and employment life, a career of 32 years as a teacher, and another 18 as a student. In October 1999 I was settling into a little town by the sea, and beginning the recreation of myself as a writer and author, poet and publisher, online blogger and journalist, editor and researcher, reader and scholar. I did not see the film, however, until sometime in the first decade after my retirement from FT, PT and casual-paid jobs. I have now enjoy
  14. After nearly 6 months, Eclogite, I'll say "thanks" for your post and "yes" a blog is a good idea for this post.-Ron
  15. Belated thanks, ErlyRisa, for your post which I saw today for the first time. I could comment at length on your post and the several topics and issues which it raises. At the moment, though, I am far too busy with life on several fronts. So, I will just post a piece I wrote in the last two days, FY possible I, at this link: http://cosmoquest.org/forum/showthread.php?155675-Swallowed-by-a-black-hole
