  1. Ronald van Elburg, an AI researcher at the University of Groningen, apparently has a PhD in physics. "1996-2000 PhD-position at the Institute for Theoretical Physics Amsterdam, leading to my PhD-thesis: `Quasi-Particles for Fractional Quantum Hall Systems'." (Source and source) CC
  2. The ICARUS team tested the OPERA result based on the article recently published by Cohen and Glashow (see link above). A search for the analogue to Cherenkov radiation by high energy neutrinos at superluminal speeds in ICARUS I'm not sure to which paper CNN, yesterday, had referred to as a refutation of the OPERA results. I'll see if I can find it. (EDIT: that report apparently has not made it to the CNN website) CC
  3. The OPERA results appear to be refuted in another paper, this time by Andrew G. Cohen, Sheldon L. Glashow (two who shouldn't be over their heads with the topic) New Constraints on Neutrino Velocities CC
  4. OPERA apparently made an error. At least that's what CNN just reported. I think this article explains the problem quite well, for the laymen: Faster-than-Light Neutrino Puzzle Claimed Solved by Special Relativity, The relativistic motion of clocks on board GPS satellites exactly accounts for the superluminal effect, says physicist. For a more detailed explanation of the OPERA error see: Time-of-flight between a Source and a Detector observed from a Satellite, Ronald A.J. van Elburg, 12 October 2011. Well, it looks like Einstein was right after all. :P CC
  5. The links posted above describe the vacuum (space or spacetime). Those properties of the vacuum apply generally, for all regions, whether they be "cosmic" or here on earth (night or day, day or night :Music:). You can cast your "no" vote, but you will have great difficulty explaining what matter occupies, if not space. But you can always try, I'm in the mood for entertainment.
  6. I have pretty much the same, or similar, question as Rade. a. Formulated differently, Dr. Dick, according to your representation of the constraints implied by the definition of an explanation where did Einstein go wrong? b. Is your complaint that only general relativity is wrong (and if so, with which theory of gravity would you replace it), or that other discoveries made by Einstein are also wrong, e.g., special relativity, mass-energy equivalence, theory of Brownian Motion, Bose–Einstein statistics, his work on Unified Field Theory, or the photoelectric effect (pivotal in establishing q
  7. Sure, let's take the second link... Vacuum state: According to quantum field theory there is no such thing as empty space. Now the first link... There is no such thing as space without field, i.e., there is no empty space, something is always present. General relativity is a metric theory of gravitation with Einstein's equations at its core. These equations describe the relation between the geometry of a four-dimensional, pseudo-Riemannian manifold representing spacetime and the energy-momentum contained in that spacetime. So to answer the OP: Matter occupies space. Eve

  9. See the links above. Who uses the N-word synonymously with space or vacuum? The only time I've heard that used is to describe the state of the universe prior to the big bang, i.e., there was nothing before, no space or time. But that of course is controversial, since there is no empirical way of knowing. It's not part of the big bang theory. The hypothetical 'nothingness' or 'void' prior to the big bang would not be an empty space: there would simply be no space. In other words, nothing is not used interchangeably with space or vacuum. 10. There is no such thing as empty space (no vacuum is truly perfect). See for example: Zero-point energy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It is the energy of the vacuum, which in quantum field theory is defined not as empty space but as the ground state of the fields. 11. Although a soldier by profession, I have never felt any sort of fondness for war, and I have never advocated it, except as a means of peace. [...] The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can, and keep moving on. ~Ulysses S. Grant
  12. Allow the president to invade a neighboring nation, whenever he shall deem it necessary to repel an invasion, and you allow him to do so whenever he may choose to say he deems it necessary for such a purpose - and you allow him to make war at pleasure. ~Abraham Lincoln
  13. Continuing the pedagogic exposition, and having a little more fun with photoshop, here is another version of the Lambda-cold dark matter model: Lambda Cold-dark matter universe. This is an artists interpretation of the standard model of big bang cosmology model: Concordance model, ΛCDM or Lambda-CDM, extending from the big bang-inflation epoch 13.7 Gyr ago to the present cosmological time. This schematic diagram attempts to illustrate the accelerated expansion in two-dimensional spherically symmetric form. Though the surface background appears to be related to the CMB radiation ther

  15. Actually, the Nobel Prize in Physics 2011 was awarded "for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae" with one half to Saul Perlmutter and the other half jointly to Brian P. Schmidt and Adam G. Riess. It was not awarded because of the "idea that we don't know what most of the Universe is made up of" as you write above. Perhaps one day in the future physicists will win another prize for the discovery of what most of the universe is made up of. Right now, resolving that problem (what is dark energy and dark matter) remains one of t

  19. After a leave of absence I'd like to take this opportunity to remark on the above exchange between Ernst Fischer and cruel2Bkind. It was an interesting discussion, on both sides of the issue. Cruel2Bkind made several attempts to refute the curved spacetime interpretation of redshift z proposed by both Fischer and coldcreation, as modest and others had attempted earlier in this thread. The exchange was constructive in that it revealed a sign error that Ernst Fischer has since been fixed. That change ultimately made no difference to the final conclusion regarding the general r

  22. Charles, Let's get right to the point: You place the blame for the 'demise of civilization' on "the inability of the world's present ideological systems to unit us." Firstly, there are no objective facts or empirical evidence that suggests civilization is on a path toward demise, or is in decline. This is simply your subjective assessment. You provide no quantitative data to support your argument that such is the case. Secondly, there are no objective facts or empirical evidence that suggests that the unification of the world's current (or future) ideological systems would solve the pr
  23. The problem with your conclusion is that it is based on erroneous assumptions. It doesn't even follow from your premise. In large cities people are comforted by living in small groups, with their families (or even alone) inside apartments, within neighborhoods. Perhaps it comforts people to frequent a small church, synagogue (or whatever) with its own rules, its own dogma. You imply that the population should be divided (into smaller groups) as opposed to living in large societies, yet claim the opposite in your conclusion, by saying we're too divided, as if a return to the small social gro
