Crackdown on drugs at Hypography

Tormod

Recommended Posts

Lately there have been a lot of threads and discussions about experimentation with drugs for obviously non-scientific reasons. The admins and moderators, and several concerned users, are taking steps to stop this trend.

First of all, we will be adding a clause to our rules:

"The explicit discussion of drugs in order to promote non-scientific experimentation of drugs, show people how to obtain or create drugs, or providing histories of drug use to show off, will lead to deletion of posts, and we will issue warnings."

Repeated violations, or serious breaches of this rule, WILL lead to banning from our forums.

We welcome drug related discussions as fits naturally when talking about medical treatments, scientific experiments, and effects and costs of drug abuse on society.

Reporting good (or bad) news about the use of drugs in a medical experiment is not against our rules. However, such claims will require strong backup, in the form of links to sources and quotes from papers etc, in order to avoid deletion.

We are sorry if this is seen as censorship. However, it is not the aim of Hypography to become a forum where people come to discuss drug use outside of a scientific realm.

Hypography wants to support the fight against drug abuse. Many of our members are minors and as such we have a responsibility to educate them, not persuade them to try drugs.

Whether some of our members experiment with drugs or not is not something we take a moral stand for or against. This is not a vendetta. However, we discourage posting while under the influence of drugs, particularly if the post is all about how the "trip" feels.

Any questions and comments are welcome in this thread.

Thank goodness!

It's about time.

The degradation of Hypography will hopefully cease soon.

I see this happening quite a bit in the future.

Anyway, what is going to be done about the threads that currently violate these new rules? Are they going to be shut down?

Does that include Caffeine? 'cuz I got a good buzz going dude!
Extraordinary claims about the effects of caffeine still require extraordinary proof, so if you’re drinking so much coffee you talk to angels, you’d better be prepared to do some serious explaining! :)

It's interesting that I can totally agree with the action, and it's impetus, and still be a little worried by some of the language in the thread.

"Degradation" comes to mind.

Of course, I don't come to Hypography to hear about someone's trip - but I don't want social science discussions about whether or not tripping is a valid pastime shut down because someone thinks it is.

I totally agree that posts about your trip, or posts "selling" drugs shouldn't be allowed - but it seems like the language of the regulation could allow it to turn into a rule where certain opinions, even if given in a scientific or logical context, could be excluded - as those discussion could be seen as "promot[ing] non-scientific experimentation of drugs"

if so, can there be a heads up of what threads will be shut down, and when?

there are certain things i'd like to get saved to my computer before they are wiped from existance.

a lot of this "degradation" of your website has been important in the shaping of the thinker and artist that i'm becoming every day.

i'd just really appreciate a handful of time beforehand to save some of the more valuable "useless banter and drug glorification".

i like to document things like this for personal reference, but i have little time and energy at this exact moment to do so.

I think TFS has a good point.

Maybe threads/posts straying off Hypography rules could be moved to Postmagnet rather than deleted. A violation of the rules could be a post that inspires a good counter point.

I have posted in other forums regarding a particular drugs use and while it did not convince the pro drug poster to stop using that particular drug several other posters announced after reading my response/links they would never themselves try that particular drug. I felt like I had done something good even though it didnt impact the person the post was directed towards.

PostMagnet is a completely different system than Hypography, so we can't move things between the two sites.

We do not discourage the discussion of drug use. We want to stop the drug *talk*. There is a huge difference between the two.

The discussion that goes

"Dude, I was so stoned I saw an army of penguins consuming the mortal remains of Stone Phillips while Diana Ross sang the national anthem in Swahili!"

Is not okay.

The one that goes -

"Drug use is something that's been practiced since people figured out certain plants made them high. In some societies, ritual, communal drug use is a vital part of the social fabric. What's the problem with me smoking weed?"

Seems like it SHOULD be okay, but I'm concerned that the language of the regulation would eliminate it as well, since it clearly promotes the use of drugs.

My understanding is that the second post wouldn't be banned - but I'm not sure that the new rule is clear in distinction.

'sall I'm sayin'.

Basically:

"Drug use is something that's been practiced since people figured out certain plants made them high. In some societies, ritual, communal drug use is a vital part of the social fabric."

Is fine, and probably won't even warrent notice.

"Drug use is something that's been practiced since people figured out certain plants made them high. In some societies, ritual, communal drug use is a vital part of the social fabric. What's the problem with me smoking weed?"

Is suspect, and will probably be noticed by moderators.

No the second one wouldnt incur a ban, but the thread would be watched carefully and kept in line,

It seems we already have a difference of interpretation.

Jay seems to be willing to let it go as long as it doesn't devolve into "Dude, I am sooo high right now." While Dave thinks it's already a problem.

What about if it were "What's the problem with anyone smoking weed?"

That is, if it were an argument about legalization? Is the position that drugs should be legal no longer acceptable?

Is this conversation legal, as I am basically promoting opinions that promote drug use? (Or at least saying they shouldn't be anathema.)

Addendum:

That came off as a lot more smart-*** than I meant it to. The real question is "Does the policy as worded prevent drug talk while not prevent drug discussion?"

We're in agreement as to what SHOULD happen - you shouldn't be able to post about your trip, or tell people everything would be better if they just got high, or anything like that, but you also shouldn't be banned (or warned, or disciplined) if you could make a cogent argument for drug legalization.
