Curiosity: perpetuum mobile?

The first principle of thermodynamics implies that the perpetuum mobile is impossible, but as the name say it is a principle, that means it isn't proven (I mean in a mathematical way, because nature shows us every day that actually it seems to be so).

My question is: is it commonly accepted? Are there people still trying to find a perpetuum mobile? Is it by now proven (and not assumed)?
