The news and the public can't get enough of a good murder mystery. Some of the stories can go on for years. I recently read an article about  the Laci Peterson case which happened years ago.

I must admit I find them interesting, but not for the deed or why they did it. I try to figure out what is going through ones mind (if they did it) in the days or weeks after the killing. There have been stories about suspects doing all sorts of nonchalant things hour or days after the murder. Then there are cases like the Maryland boyfriend above who held hands and appeared to be grieving along with relatives and begging for her safe return.

For some people lying is a normal thing done everyday. They are used to telling people falsehoods for various reasons. Possible to make money, trying to impress their peers, and of course to stay out of trouble. Committing murder however, takes things to another level. In these situations what is going through their mind? For most I assume their mind must race to keep evidence secret and or try not to incriminate themselves by giving police conflicting story's.

It seems some are better and mentally prepared than others to handle the short time immediately after a murder. For some they have the ability to preform multiple steps to avoid their involvement. They may clear text messages, clean blood off of items, perfect their alibi that can prove they were not at the scene when the murder took place.

So are the majority of these people laying awake at night thinking the police will definitely figure it out? Are they considering leaving town? Do they feel comfortable their story will hold and are not worried? Does their fear of getting caught subside a little every day in lock step with every day the police don't zero in on them?

I would think their line of thinking and reflection aside from fear, is how did someway, somehow the culmination of my past has led me to this point. They were so mired in rage, or trouble that they needed to make their life better, and taking another life was the only option from the suspects perspective. Some may not know the gravity of what they just did until it's done. They may not be ready for the reactions and underestimated the, attention, and distress by relatives and police. We are not talking about a serial killer, mob enforcers, or drug gang members. The people I refer to are everyday, usually law abiding or semi law abiding citizens that followed the rules enough to be accepted by the rest of society, and they were just another person before the death.

What is the mentality of a person who just did the unthinkable? What do they feel in the hours or days before they are caught? What would be your state of mind if you were in that situation?
