DianeG Posted February 10, 2017 Report Share Posted February 10, 2017 While certain processes are not under direct conscious control, Stanislas Dehaene says many processes can be either /or, and it depends on certain thresholds of stimulation in one part of the brain, and the extent to which it spreads to, or is shared with other parts of the brain. In his book "Consciousness in the Brain" he describes experiments demonstrating actions once thought to be entirely conscious can be processed below the level of awareness - things like processing numbers or the meanings of words. I'm not sure about prizing conscious or subconscious processes as more critical for survival, or entirely separate, is accurate, as automatic processing frees up conscious processing to attend to things that require choice or flexible responses. The fight or flight impulse is a conscious experience based on external data. The subconscious mind is primarily concerned with homeostasis and internal control of bodily functions. write4u Posted March 18, 2021 Report Share Posted March 18, 2021 I ran across this wonderful lecture by Eleanor Maguire which delves deeper in the actual mechanisms of consciousness. Note : both lectures tend to reinforce the other from a slightly different perspective. But both addressing fundamental "survival strategy". Seth proposes that from our memories "we create our own reality from the inside out". (controlled hallucinations) Maguire proposes that from our memories "we create our future expectations".
