For example, like when a magnet that sticks to a fridge.Water. The angle of contact between water and silica is very close to zero, indicating a high degree of affinity between water and sand. This is due to the polarity of water and - more specifically - hydrogen bonding between the oxygen atoms in silica with hydrogen atoms in water. These water based coatings adhere to and bind the sand, into a flexible but tough and abrasive resistant matrix, that can cushion the legs from the impact of sports.
