The way to settle this is to give the land to Russia. what is unused land worth? this slow drive could be costly though, so, erect a border just inside where the forces are at the moment, or, plan a siege, a 'quite siege.'

Can Russia build that fast to support their troops with villages? if they were to bring things to build with them, then they might start 'slow domination' of Ukraine. the important things are that the people are safe and there is no waste. if they were to use water cannons, they could wait for them to get to the cities, and then sweep the soldiers away without firing a shot, which, i am sure, that is what the goal is.

Alternatively, they could launch chemical weapons at areas between them and the advancing soldiers, polluting the land where they want to go through. or, they could get their allies together for a drive - you come onto my land somewhere, i go onto your land elsewhere, yes?

What led you to conclude that Eastern Ukraine is “unused land”, Brett?

In terms of population density, the region is similar to the US. For example, the eastern most province of Ukraine, Luhansk Oblast, isn’t quite half the size of the US state of WV (26,684 vs. 62,755 km2), but has a 21% larger population (2,246,884 vs. 1,850,326). Its population density is slightly higher than the US state of VA (84 vs 81/km2), and slightly higher than the average for all of Ukraine (74/km2)

As to “giving the land to Russia”, that’s a complicated proposition. Since the overthrow of Ukraine’s pro-Russian former president Viktor Yanukovych in Feb 2014, Luhansk has declaired itself an independent republic, so it’s arguably part of neither Russia nor Ukraine. 85% of its people are native Russian language speaker, 14% Ukrainian language speakers, so culturally, its people likely identify more as Russian than Ukrainian.

If you follow the links above and research the population and culture of Ukraine more thoroughly, I think you’ll see that viewing Russia as a foreign invader of Ukraine isn’t, in the minds of the people involved, accurate.

From a purely tactical/logistical perspective, Russia has a strong military, including transportation, and with overwhelming air-superiority over Ukraine, can pretty much move anything anywhere it wants there. They don’t need to build much, nor send large numbers of troops, just weapons and know-how to the ethnic Russians already living there.

My guess for the immediate future of Eastern Ukraine is that what’s happened in the past year will keep on happening, with Russia sending arms and military trainers to self-declared independent states within Ukraine, while the Ukrainian government in Kiev tries to reassert its control over them. Eventually, I expect mostly Russian speaking regions will be small independent states with strong ties to Russia, though I wouldn’t be surprised if Russia didn’t annex some more areas, as it did in Crimea. American and Europe will support Ukraine for the simple reason that they oppose Russia.
