Great Science Project For Young Children?

Wow, science fairs for first graders? Glad to see they're getting them started so young now, especially since science has been getting cut for so long.

In fourth grade my daughter did one on gravity that basically consisted of rolling marbles down a couple of ramps (we used some L-shaped wood pieces) into sand. Both ramps the same length, but one starts higher so the marble goes farther; sand is used because it provides a consistent amount of resistance so it allows easy measurement of how much inertia is induced from the gravity (or in first grade terms, "it's got more energy so it goes farther").

Pretty simple to make and understand and you may have parts lying around the house you can use or spend not too many bucks at the hobby store.

Don't limit a child to your own learning, for he was born in another time, :phones:

That's a great idea with the gravity and the marbles. I think my daughter would love that. Thank you.

The science fair is for all ages, kindergarten through 12th grade. Most of the kids participating are older, but my daughter loves science and I thought it would be fun. She is not required to participate at her age.

It is great to see that they are starting out earlier for kids with fairs like this. I remember we had to wait until we were older too. My girl came in last week to talk about the Scientific Method for kids. It seems they show the kids a cute video now and that gets them started. Now she is running around the place looking for new things to experiment with. I have a feeling spring break this year is going to be full of projects like this.
