Tiny Synthetic Human Brains

SaxonViolence

Recommended Posts

Who has heard about this?

Scientists seem to have been able to get human stem cells to grow into tiny Pea-Sized "Human Brains".

Check it out:

What do some of y'all think this means?

Exciting Breakthrough?

Tempest in a Teapot?

Junk Science and Pure Hype?

Does anyone even remotely see a time when a synthetic organic brain might be an integral part of a computer system?

Tempest in a teapot AND exciting breakthrough! I have seen documentaries in which scientists are currently working on the meshing of organic tissue within "tech" (computer) environments, such as computer chips, etc. It makes me nervous when we consider all the possibilities surrounding artificial intelligence. Such amazing medical advances could be made and yet is there a moral dilemma? Quite possibly.

The potential to heal for something like this is enormous.  The potential for abuse though is just as enormous.  I think we might be getting a bit close to playing God when we approach this sort of thing.

Guess which way the jackass that started the thread wants to go.

What!? My response is too aggressive...too violent? Gee, I wonder where that comes from.

Yes, Turtle I think it is too aggressive. We do not refer to fellow members as jackasses. Especially when there is no provocation for such within the thread where the offence takes place.

Now as to the topic itself, I entered the thread in error. I thought, because of the tiny brains reference, it was about politicians.

Well, we just will have to agree to disagree.

Seems a little double-standard there to me. It's OK for you to insult a whole class of people, but it's wrong for me to insult one person.

As long as I'm on the rocks, I'm gonna roll with it. I have reported the jackass that started this thread too many times to count and my reports went unanswered or more recently there was no one to read and ignore them. I'm possessed of a selective photographic memory and if y'all demand more evidence than I intend to give here, I can swamp you if you like.

So, just the members name is offensive and it is this I had in mind when I posted just above "Gee, I wonder where that comes from". The that is my terse manner, if I have to spell that out. You Mods and/or admins have the ability to remove Violence from the members name, and for the umpteenth time I'm asking/prompting/suggesting you do it. That's the least y'all can do and IMHO the guy should have been banned looooooong ago. Not only is it the right thing to do, but I won't let it go.

Then there is the double-spaced one-line posting that is hard to read, a waste of space as it makes pages long, and a deliberate jackassery to me, you mods, and the reader. I have reported this numerous times as well and challenged the member on it when the staff was absent. Any correction taken. Nope.

Then there is the common thread of hateful, mean, snide, and other such synonymous descriptors of the content of the member in question. This thread led to or spun off the 'tiny human' thread he also started where the author's intent was to come up with as many criminal uses for tiny humans as possible. Yep; complained then too and challenged the member. Action taken by staff? Nada.

Then there is the habit of this member of logging in for no other purpose than to have Violence front & center on our board as antagonization directed at me personally as well as any readers. I note this stopped went I gave a similar screed as this one to Greg in the Suggestions thread. Any action taken still? No.

I hope that is all plenty clear... yet again. If not I can further elaborate. Any action going to be taken now? Time will tell. :soapbox:

The difference is that forum etiquette requires politeness between members. Disagree as you will, but I would hope that a member who has been so committed to this forum would wish it to be recognised as a place of politeness. We should attack ideas, not individuals.

I had expected that my reference to politicians brains would be clearly seen as the joke it was, a joke introduced to lighten the mood after my criticism of your action. Moreover, I think you are well aware that there is a considerable difference between personal remarks about members here and a nominal, anonymous class.

In regard to your following post, as you accurately (implicitly) note I have not been here for some time. I am unaware of any of the points you raise. I'm not planning to go back over the past. What I do intend to do is to participate here as an active, positive member and to moderate as well as I possibly can. The latter includes asking members, regardless of their status and history, not to call other members jackasses, whatever provocation they may have suffered.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the name SaxonViolence. It doesn't resonate with me in any way. If it was simply Violence I might find it objectionable. I understand it upsets you, however if you have already raised this with Greg and he has taken no action, I suggest you ignore the name and focus on post content. Argue, logically and calmly, with what you find there that you disagree with. That would be in line with what I remember of your posting style when I was a more regular visitor.

Thanks.

So again, we are going to just agree to disagree.

You're welcome.

Sitting here sick with child germs right now for the last two days running a temperature that likes to bounce around more than a kangaroo I can agree with that. I see a big potential but each time something like this happens I am always a little worried about it. Look at some of the ideas people have made over the years in TV shows and movies, how many times is something made good but used for bad. I would love to know where they go with this but I am still a little hesitant.
