Stem Cell Research Limits

South Korea just moved into the lead in research in stem cells. Well not really, but it is getting there: S. Korea Takes Lead in Stem Cell Research

Although the House this evening "handed Bush a big defeat" by voting to overturn the administration's policy of limiting stem cell research to lines created prior to 2001, Bush is threatening to make the *first* veto of his tenure in office on this issue. Scientists argue that this severely limits research and the change to the laws are being advocated mostly by extreme entertainment industry liberals like Nancy Reagan.

Resolved: Pandering by conservative politicians to the extreme social conservatives on this issue as well as stiffling science courses in schools is turning the United States into a third world country. This despite the fact that these same conservatives hail outsourcing because we will continue to be "technology innovators."

Discuss.

Cheers,

Buffy

This is not really a big deal yet. But your post made me chuckle.

1) Stem cell research technology is advancing with the existing cell lines. I suspect we will be able to collaborate on methods as foreign labs use our methods on their cell lines. I also suspect it is only a matter of time before foreign cell lines come here. They probably do already. Ergo, the limitation on research is essentially nil.

2) This is apparently not a conservative/liberal of republican/democrat issue. The floor debate was all over the map. Bush indeed has some moral position on this, but a large number of our reps/senators to not hold to party line on this. I think this will evaporate as a significant partisan issue.

Third world country?? I think you could spawn some more colorful hyperbole that that. I have faith in you.

Operative word being "yet." :hihi:

I live to amuse you Bio (Fish whistling in the background).

Why are the scientists complaining then about these lines being limited? Are they just whiners? Are they on to something?

Social conservatives are fighting tooth and nail about the immorality of this one already...

That's why I cited support from such uber liberals as Nancy Reagan. Its NOT partisan. Its not conservative/liberal. Its about pandering to an extremist special interst group:
Bush indeed has some moral position on this
Why? Its seems like political suicide that offends everyone across the spectrum and does put us way behind on research. You have not addressed the key issue that governments elsewhere--like the leftist bastion of communism in California (why do we Californians always have take care of things when those idiots in Washington can't tie their shoelaces?)--are pouring huge amounts of money when we're spending far more on a missle defense system that won't work and will never be needed? Is there a Manchurian Candidate or a Foole running our executive branch?
Third world country?? I think you could spawn some more colorful hyperbole that that. I have faith in you.
I'll try harder. I pick up lots of argumentative techniques from watching House of Commons debates... "We are being buried in a compost pile of lemming-like obstinancy by ignorant bands of raving lunatics..." Howzzat?

It is politically foolish. Bush, like him or not, is NOT a politico. He actually does what he thinks is right. You can question his judgement all you like, but he thinks embryonic stem sell research is a bad precedent. Damn the torpdeos. Sound familiar? LIke Iraq maybe?

Personally I think they should use discardrd embryos for research, as long as it is illegal to charge for them.

Tee hee! Yep! That's what Molly Ivins thinks too and I agree with her: He actually sounds like a really nice guy, and he's got strong convictions. This one in particular though smells of Karl Rove-style pandering though...but even *I* will give him the benefit of the doubt on this one! :hihi:

Story today sez thousands are going in the dumpster every day due to being past their sell-by, er, use-before date, but its the "using" life that offends the extremists. Better that they become landfill if we can't force the women to turn them all into cute babies...

You know, it really seems like you have a moderate case of Rovophobia. A bunch of Dems have that. You are just one of those Republican-voting Democrats.

I am sure that will be a poll category some day soon. Probably already is.

Oh I don't *fear* him, I just want to stake him! He's more evil than a lot of the demons I've had to slay, or even Warren! You probably feel the same way about James Carville! :hihi:
