Physics - Electro Magnetic Levitation

I believe no one has done this before in the world so i am in a need of assistance in this project of mine, first of all I am doing this project for the IB extended essay and i wish for this topic to stay here as it is and not to be distributed else where. The concept of the project is based on quantum levitation, but this time I will be using electro magnets. These are the problems i have right now.

  • how much work is needed to make an electro magnets
  • if possible the exact amount of volts and ampere
  • what type of iron bar (bigger version of a nail) can be used to megnetized it
  • what type of copper wire i should use? gauged or not?

again I beg that this topic stays in this forum only as i could fail my diploma even though this is my own words posted in this forums

the iron bar is just the beginning, after electro magnet is established i will be merging the tip of the iron bar (north or south) onto a flat iron plate which shows that the plate is also magnetized, thus placing a magnet on top of it would make it levitate (well im not sharing how im controlling it). thats is all i can say for now. if possible i can get a reply ASAP trough the forums or my email directly ([email protected]).

Thank you for those who are helping me.

There are a number of toys that use electromagnets to levitate objects.

1. not much to a lot depending on the size. I've wound small (2" dia. circular) ones using a modified fishing reel and a spool of fine magnet wire purchased from an electronics store. I've also wound flat iron bar stock 4" long using the same rig. (I like winding experimental bass and guitar pickups with electromagnet cores.).

2. depends on your core material, how big your core is ,what gauge wire, how many winds, and how strong a magnet you are trying to make

3.Depending on the size and type of magnet you are trying to levitate...a schedule 40 steel or iron pipe cap seems a good choice....set on the table like a cup and wound to the top it should float a small magnet in it's center....Given an AC power supply it should even cause the magnet to spin. a good low current AC/DC power supply is a model train transformer, Slot car transformers work well as well for but for DC only. A bonus is either can be had VERY cheaply.

4. Not sure what you mean by gauged. AFAIK all wire gauge is is the measurement of it's cross section. And thickness will be determined by how much power you are going to feed it and how many winds it will take to generate the field you need.

and of course this sweet link from Mr Moon http://en.wikipedia....etic_levitation
