___Just finished watching some local news (Portland, Oregon US area) & yet another murder; double murder no less by a 14 year old boy!

___Some are robbery, some domestic (we had an Iraq veteran in the area kill his wife recently), some are gangs, some are drugs (meth),...etc.

___Just wondering how everyone's areas compare out there in hyper-land? :)

florida. just down the road a girl was dumped by her "friends" and she layed there on the side of the road overdosed on MDMA where she died and was found later.

lots of kids my age get drunk and drive and die a lot. as for murders, i havn't heard of any recently. but they may be because of the excessive amounts of rural swamp areas this place has to offer. feed the bodies to the crocs!

heh, makes sense. there's always people 'missing.'

i would also like to say that when i drive at night, i ALWAYS see AT LEAST one drunk driver. and it's completely ridiculous that driving drunk is a part of redneck culture-which i must say is THE WORST CULTURE ON THE PLANET :)

gah, my opinion. i'm itching to get out of the south...horribly boring and close-minded place.

oh AND OF COURSE, there are too many deaths by natural cause to name.

florida, afterall, is the "end zone" :)

yeah this is really off topic, but i saw the saddest thing not too long ago.

i drove past a senior home, or whatever you want to call it, not too long ago. there was a man in a wheelchair with oxygen running up his nostrils just sitting out by the street, just starring. i don't know if they allowed him to go out there, or he just wandered out there. yeah, i know death is a natural thing. but it was still really sad. :) :

Orb: Florida is not the South, you got to at least get into the northern extremities of the panhandle to even smell the *real* South. Try Alabama or Mississippi...well, on the other hand, don't. Its not worth it....

Back on Topic: Oaktown (that's Oakland for those of you who are not into Hip Hop Culture). Need I say more? Got 1 murder every 36 hours right down the road from me. Gangs, drug dealers, high schools with 30% graduation rates, areas where most of the births are out of wedlock... Guess what? I still say its a great place to live: center of everything, great food, great culture (like jazz? Yoshi's! Eli's Mile High Club), baseball! Berkeley up the street SF across the bridge. Still pretty depressing to read the news paper and there are places you don't want to be driving at night...

Cheers,

Buffy

when the majority of the vehicles on the road are big trucks making up for small penises with rebel flags painted on them, and everybody wears dark blue pants and white shirts with even more rebel flags on them, i must say, this is ths south. yeah yeah, its not the southest south can get, but it's so south it's sickening.

To borrow the old Texas phrase, you can count on these guys being "all white robe and no noose."* Macabre, but prolly true...

"Segregation nah, Segregation t'marrow Segregation fo 'evah!"**... NOT!

[okay, some of my quotes are getting extremely obscure to many of you youngsters and folks from around the globe, so I'll footnote them occasionally:

* Old Texas phrase is "He's all hat and no horse" meaning he dresses up like a cowboy but he really isn't.

** George Wallace, Inaugural Address as Governor of Alabama, 1963. He got the largest 3rd party vote percentage wise in modern US history in the 1968 Presidential election winning 46 Electoral College votes...]

G'day Buffy,

First, off topic, Reggae forever! Now, down to business. Wonder how close Aussie and the States can be?

We've got two really large groups of readily identifiable, "disaffected males".

1. Hiphop baggy like really oversized pants and sweaters and that blXXdy cap back to front moving in the eternal teenage swagger slouch and rap and zap and I lost their lingo a decade ago. Ghetto black roles transformed to downunder migrant and working class youths some getting close to being gran-dads.

2. Jeans, boots, whiskers and checked shirts, booze and country music, pubs (bars) with everything bolted down, rebel flags and pickup trucks, "I shoot an' I vote" stickers, and the whole world's "agin us". Back to the good old days, when men were men, kids done what they was told (if'n dey knew what was good for 'em), and women were women and not smart XXXX BXXXhes like today. Anywhere between late twenties and their fifties, often grossly overweight though not quite as bad as their outlaw bikie cousins. GEEEEZZZ!!!!! can THEY WHINGE!!!!

Sound vaguely Familiar? The cowboys even talk about their constitutional right to bear arms! WE DON'T EVEN HAVE A BILL OF RIGHTS IN AUSSIELAND!!!! cheers from a not so cheerful gub.

I'm basically in Dallas. Last year the FBI released the the crime stats and Dallas had the highest crime rate in the US. The Dallas Polices Commisioner (Bolton) was not fired. Then a big story broke that the DPD was using fake drugs to bust illegals. Bolton was still not fired. Finally after a fight he was fired. He sued!!! :xx: Said it was a racial thing (Bolton was black).

They then hired the Arlington PD (Arlington is a pseudo-burb in the DFW Metroplex). David Kunkle.... His son was a well known drug dealer in the early 90's... We live in a great society..

Hey gub,

I've often said that Australia was probably the only other place in the world I'd really ever want to live (except maybe if I could afford a nice flat in Kensington or Chelsea in London), except for the fact that so many men there are absolute pigs (the chauvinist kind)--obviously you're not one of em gub!

These guys you describe are a dime a dozen here, even in California you'll find both everywhere. Here though, the HipHops actually pack Mac-9s and the Rednecks have shotguns hanging on the gun racks in the back windows of their pickups, so I'd call the guys you see just "wannabees." No question though that they all are symptomatic of the general rise in persecution complex among the not so poor and disaffected...

Cheers,

Buffy

G'day Buffy,

Unfortunately we still reach our share of mass killings on a par with the States. If a bloke's hankering to splatter blood everywhere, tight gun laws don't stop him. Where it helps BIGTIME! is in our much smaller numbers of one off homicides which, in both countries, constitute the vast majority of fatalities. It seems if it takes a few minutes to find the gun and load it, the average thickhead has had time to cool down a bit.

Must say I find your term "persecution complex" particularly apt when it comes to our disgruntled males and am surprised that I've not come across it before in relation to this phenonomen. Many of these fellas have never been so relatively well off, yet to hear them mouth off, you're expected to accept that they belong to the most discriminated of minorities. It's both pathetic and bathetic, yet, often extremely nasty. Those caught within their grip often suffer dreadfully, code for women and children yet again. The relations between the sexes downunder are as fraught as ever and whilst I wince at many of the messages many women broadcast these days, most of us blokes behave at best little better than sooks, degenerating down to vicious little brats. Feminism has challenged us to treat people who happen to be female as individuals, to actually go to the trouble of discriminating between our fellow ladies to see each as they really are. OBVIOUSLY TOO DAMN HARD!!! for most of us blokes. cheers gub.

___I have this generalized view that no matter where in time, within a certain range there is a fairly constant murder rate. Moreover, it may only seem that it's 'more' because of the media presentation.

___Murder is the topic of many of the oldest writings & always a popular subject for literary/theatrical interest. Besides my interest in international views on the topic, I have an eye on the number of views in regard to the thread title.

:xx:
