Some Interesting Facts of English Language

• "Forty" is the only number which has its letters in alphabetical order. "One" is the only number with its letters in reverse alphabetical order.

• "Rhythms" is the longest English word without the normal vowels, a, e, i, o, or u.

• There is no word that rhymes with orange.

• "Go." is the shortest complete sentence in the English language.

• Of all the words in the English language, the word ' set ' has the most definitions!

• Only 3 words in the English language end in "ceed": "proceed," "exceed," and "succeed."

• Of all the languages in the world, English has the largest vocabulary about 800,000 words."Underground" is the only word in the English language that begins and ends with the letters "und."

• "The sixth sick sheik's sixth sheep's sick" is said to be the toughest tongue twister in English.

• "Four" is the only number whose number of letters in the name equals the number.

Counter-examples:

  • "pi" is number too in reverse order
  • "orange" rhymes with "orange" ;-)
  • Isnt "I." shorter and also a complete sentence?
  • "Forty" is shorter than "almost" and is also a word not only a number, or you would also have "hot". Maybe you meant the longest? But then you would have "accent" which is of same length (ok, but then you have a double c)...
  • Also "blasfemious", but ok technically you did not say that the 2 you wrote were the only ones, but implicitly...

 

And are you really sure that english has the largest vocabulary? Any sources? Ok, maybe my judgement is biased by the fact that most english speaker use much less than half the available words (same in the other languages).
