Family stories of trailblazing

I don't know if this will work, but that hasn't stopped me in the past.

My late parents were very fond of stories of the American West, of westward expansion and the hardships of homesteaders. They particularly loved stories of the wagon trains. Although the Oregon trail was still in use until the 1940's, I have a feeling that lore, that personal history is being lost.

Does anybody have personal or family histories of frontier life? I won't limit this to North America. Do we have any trekkies from South Africa? Anybody from any part of the world whose family histories of going off into the wilderness are still available?

Thanks.
