Internet Information Project

It used to be said that you could find almost anything on the internet. Blueprints, Instructions, Chemical compounds, etc. But to me it seems we browse a censored and restricted internet. Not censored in the fact that you can't look at naughtly pictures, but censored in the fact that there are certain things you cant say without the government jumping on you for something like "terrorism". There are ways to circumvent this, such as limewire and bittorrent, but then there is even more filth and false information.

The internet was created to share information. Much of the information we share is useful but there is still that 75% that is trash, noise, porn, or otherwise. Everything you put on the Internet must comply to certain laws, must only show certain things, and must not contain certain information. There are many sites that hold information but you must pay, or they say they hold information. Some only contain viruses. To find anything useful you must sift through tons and tons of "information" Its horrible. The internet has changed. Its become to watered down and mucked up.

I aim to change this. I want to create a place on the internet that has information of all kinds. Blueprints, datasheets, instructions, history, how stuff works, books, calculations, translations, entire languages, EVERYTHING! Everything, except for cracked games, bootlegged dvds, and illiegal music downloads. There is enough of those. And not just stuff in the USA, Caneda, and the UK. From everywhere in the world. Anyone with access to the internet should be able to view and store information.

"From here to the eyes and the ears of the 'verse."

Now for the contraversial part. This store of information will have to be monitered.

It would be sort of like wikipedia. Because people (on the 'net especially) cant be trusted to be mature and not put false information or spam, porn, or any general noise.

I dont know how I would do this. I suppose a bunch of free websites linked together might start this off. Im not sure. I would host a site at my house but my mom keeps thinking the lights on my switch mean that my computer is on and that I am wasting electricity so she usually unplugs all my computer stuff.

So Im not sure how I would do this.

Please, any ideas, or any other comments would be nice. I think this is something that could help the world out a bit.

The biggest point of contention seems to be that on the one hand you are saying...

It used to be said that you could find almost anything on the internet. Blueprints, Instructions, Chemical compounds, etc. But to me it seems we browse a censored and restricted internet.

and on the other hand you are saying...

This store of information will have to be monitered.

What is the difference? Are you simply proposing a filter?

I am saying that I want to create a website(s) devoted to the sharing of information like the internet was supposed to be. And I mean any peice of knowlege anyone wants to put on it. Books, histroy, etc. any type of knowledge.

Then I go on to say that if these websites are created then they must be monitered if it is something where everyone contributes directly. Sorta like wikipedia, because some people just cant act mature on the internet.

Have you heard of the Google Book project? Part of the problem with implementing your idea is seeing that authors & publishers receive due credit & recompense. Google Books recently settled a lawsuit that promises to satisfy the situation.

Here's a story: Law Blog - WSJ.com : What Does the Google Book Scan Settlement Mean for Viacom?

PS Here's the project site: http://books.google.com/googlebooks/library.html

I dont have a problem with that. But on the other hand I dont have any money. And Im sure a bunch of authors will give us permission but Im not so sure about the companies that make text books and stuff like that.

Im not trying to make this some sort of way to get around buying books and stuff. My goal is to make a big store of USEFUL information on the internet. Vast enough and organized enough so that everyone can find it useful no matter what they are doing or where they are from.

I would much prefer to create a "data heaven" In some other country but I would need investors to back up my plan and stuff like that. And that would steer this in a totally different direction. Towards corporate interests and stuff like that.

So join their effort. :hihi: If you are just interested in the altruism of such a project then lend your support & ideas to what is already underway & funded.

How does what you propose differ from a web-based encyclopedia?

An encyclopedia is more like a dictionary to me, you look up a word or phrase and it gives you the definition and how the word came about. It does hold history to. But this would have more than that. It would hold many things you couldnt find in a encyclopedia. It would hold diagrams, blueprints, schematics, how to's, how things work, locations, laws, why things are here, etc.

The google book project isnt exactly that great. appearently you have to pay for books that are still in print or something like that. They mostly have older books more of one book I was reading had upside down chapters. :-( it did have "flag this page as undreadable" but not a whole book or anything like that.

They even have books like "invitation to the game" which as I remember reading was an old beat up copy someone had given me when I was 8 or 9. And "heir Apparent". They do have some of the classics like asimov's The Foundation Series.
