Continuing this theme of threads on humorous and/or scifi classic phenomena...

Okay, this is one I'm not sure made it outside the US. It had a huge following here, starting on a local access channel and then getting passed along to Comedy Central. Its somewhat hard to describe if you haven't seen it, but the basic idea is a guy, his bots, on a space station, being tortured by some evil folks who make him watch really, really, really bad movies (fans have pretty much unanimously chosen "Manos, Hands of Fate" as the worst of the worst), which are subjected to an ongoing commentary by Joel (later Mike), and two or three of his bots (Tom Servo and Crowe, sometimes Gypsy--you see their shadows outlined at the bottom of the screen), and it is unmercifully funny, most of the time...

The MST-The Movie--featuring This Island Earth--came out several years ago and should be available in PAL/multi-region, but for those of you in the US, there's a new set that has finally gotten rights clearance ("Manos" is included).

Calling all MSTies! What's your favorite/most hated MST3K movie?

"...if you wonder how he eats and breathes, and other science facts, repeat to yourself 'Its, just a show, I really should relax!'"

Cheers,

Buffy

I was searching for something else and came across this dusty thread. I am a BIG fan of MST! I've seen them all. I can't name a favorite off the top of my head. Actually, I don't think I've seen an episode since before this thread's inception. I bet it's on utube now. brb

After i was injured i was laid up for several months and had nothing to do but lay in bed and watch TV, I was forced to watch MST over and over again, it was horrible, it warped my brain for all time...... Actually I laughed my butt off and MST was often the high light of my very boring days as I waited to heal. I loved that show. I really can't think of my fav but this island earth was a classic for sure!

DAMN!!!

I have never, NEVER :evil: seen a single full episode of MST3K. {sob!!} There have been about 4 occassions in my WHOLE FREAKIN LIFE when I wuz at someone's house, or in a hospital visiting a relative, and MST3K was on, but it would obviously have been RUDE to ignore the friend/relative and watch the tube. And so, I didn't. {sob!!}

And that's it. THAT'S IT!!!! ;)

My life is empty and meaningless! :banghead:

For a long time, MSTies kind of resembled the Deadheads with tape trading. I've got a huge box of them packed away somewhere. The reason for this was that they did this on a shoestring, and could buy rights for x number of showings for a season (usually 3 or so) for not much money because the movies were so darned awful. Once they were MSTified and became hugely popular, the rights holders jacked up the prices, and some shows were never repeated *because* the rights were budget busters. Since Comedy Central bought the MST3k production out completely and they have armies of trained lawyers, a huge number of episodes have come out on DVD (unfortunately, as far as I know, very few from seasons 1 and 2, which most folks consider to be the best).

For those of you who are fans, you probably also know that most of the gang has reformed under the new name Cinematic Titanic and they're producing "new episodes" that are downloadable and available on DVD.

I had no idea. I've never dug into the culture surrounding it, but just enjoyed the episodes via TV and DVD. It's sad to hear that I've missed the best stuff as a result. :banghead:

I did not know. Thanks!

Promo unpaid by a fan (me):

Cinematic Titanic
upcoming shows:

  • Los Angeles Oct 25-29

  • St. Louis Nov 21

  • Philadelphia Dec 31

We went to see them in San Francisco in February, and they are better than ever. My daughter practically went into shock when she shook Joel's hand after the show and he said, "Thank you for coming to the show!"

No 'bots, but as the reviewer said "The Led Zeppelin of Riffing"....

Joe Buffy sez check it out.

Just because you lost your hair, doesn't mean you have to take it out on the planet, ;)

Thank you DD! Thank you Buffy! Thank you for getting this thread out of its vault and letting me know there is hope for the future.

I have 36 episodes of the Sci Fi Channel version on tape on tapes I can find, and the rest on tapes boxed up somewhere in my basement. Now I'll be buying the DVD's from "Cinematic Titanic."

To answer the original question, my favorite (again, only from Sci Fi) is "Werewolf," which has a really good song in the middle Host Segment. My worst is "Future War" (or "Future Wax" by 'bots anticipating a painfully slow title scroll). The "Case of Spring Fever" short above is really annoying and is a great example of, as they say, a PSA from the Middle Ages.

I was supervising several college students when I first started watching MST3K. They universally told me they had watched it as children and outgrew it in high school. I was the only one immature enough to like the series, and I still love to watch my tapes.

I am truly sorry I missed the Comedy Central series, but I saw in the Sci Fi series a gradual improvement in the Host Segments, so I don't know if I'd agree that the oldest are the best. Still, I'd like to have a chance to find out.

Any recommendations? Any affordable DVD's?

Thanks.
