You know you are a geek if you have ever corrected your physics teacher when upon describing Newton's laws of motion, the teacher says, "This explains the motion of everything, from your pen to galaxies".... You know you are a geek if you have, upon showing your pictures from you recent research trip, corrected your friends on the species of a particular gull. alexander Posted September 19, 2007 Author Report Share Posted September 19, 2007 Theory, its like this, Newtonian physics explain motion to some extent , however within that there are quite a few things they do not explain or simply can't, such as the why no massive object is able to travel at the speed of light, it does not explain the behavior of microscopic objects, it does not explain the behavior of light as it passes by a massive object (this is called gravitational lensing), it most certainly does not present the need of use of Lorentz transformations, and in fact would not have a way of describing them, it does not explain the seed of light itself.... in short Newtonian physics are ok for astronomers, but if you need exact data, more complex physics and equations of both relativities are more appropriate for the task. alexander Posted September 20, 2007 Author Report Share Posted September 20, 2007 Excellent, well, here's a bit of my philosophy :) Never be too intimidated to post a question, no question is a bad question, only questions that get asked and fully explained 5 times are, and its not even that they are bad questions, it just reflects on ones level of intellect. Questions, or rather answers to them, especially good answers, help people understand what they were once perplexed about, adding to their eternal pit of knowledge a bit of information that may prove its worth later on. And that, in our every day quest for explanation of our own little universes, is as good as it can possibly get. Intimidation by people that know more is a good thing as well, you see, if everyone knew what everyone else knew, our lives would almost loose meaning. Have you ever pondered why people imagined supernatural beings, aside from using an easy route to explain things? People like to have something to look up to, that way, even the best athlete in Greece, would still look to Hercules, and that is something that is going to push him to continue exercising to try to break that boundary between man and 1/2 god. Another force that drives people is the force that makes us want to prove someone that they are wrong, and that as well drives many aspects of our lives, especially in science. If nobody wanted to prove religious outlooks wrong, we would never have science, and would still be living in a farmer/gatherer societies in scattered city-states across the globe. Failure to want to understand things, and many times understanding and innovation is achieved by wanting to prove someone else wrong, would make our current society, driven by innovation and technology among other things, crumple (i.e. not work). The goal of Hypography, and this may not even be the real goal, but this is as i view Hypo, and every post i make, is as much to educate already scientifically literate people, provide them with a platform to troubleshoot their latest theories, through networking with other scientifically minded-people, as it is to get other people involved in our community, join our ranks by just seeing what others are saying and just going and doing some research and catching a new interest. At the end of a day, for me at least, if someone learned something, my time here was not spent for nothing. But I also think that aside from the science side of this forum, as everywhere, there are times and places when just plain having fun is in order, as i view it, life without fun, no matter what the reality of life is, is a pointless consumption of natural resources; that is why you see threads like this one, or the Futurama one, that is why you see "word inventions" in linguistics, and the whole water cooler section of the forum, drawing people in and getting them interested in any area of science, even if they didn't think they would ever be a scientist, or a part of a scientific community. We also try to work really hard to get the bad apples out of the community, we stride to make it as friendly a community as we possibly can, where no matter how crazy an idea you may have, people will always keep their cool, and act appropriately and adequately, not saying people have to always agree and may not prove you wrong, but there is definitely no place for bullying, name calling, harassing or attacking of people at Hypo; we don't welcome it, and we don't tolerate it, but we also don't just jump to conclusions; the user in most cases has the ability to defend his posts, or apologize, not that they always opt to, but in either case, banning is the choice that a user makes themselves, we don't stand by abuse, we act... I'd like to end there for now (trust me i can go on about my philosophy on things for a great while). I am certainly hoping, YOU, the user, whoever reads this article, to be more open to my goal, and will be less scared to post. You have nothing to loose by posting a comment, but you may find someone who thinks like you, network, and maybe get a new friend, and friends are really important, if you ask me, real friends that is... You know you are a geek when you own the best pair of chest waders you could afford, but you don't hunt or fish. You know you area a geek when your travel kit includes a regular fish net, a fine mesh fish net, collection vials, rubber gloves, insect repellant, a portable microscope, and a number of animal identification books. You know you are a geek when you own 4 microscopes, but you are a stay at home woman, with no kids or scientific training. You know you are a geek when you bring home mud samples from the local lake/river/puddle, and set it up in a jar, add water, and wait to see what creatures appear. You know you are a geek when you know the taxonomical names of each of the species of fish in your aquarium. You know you are a geek when you feel you absolutely must prove your geekness in a topic that was not at all about your brand of geekiness! Oh God...I nearly bought a pair of hip waders so I could go fish garbage out of the local pond when I was living in Grande Prairie......so I TOTALLY know where you're coming from. I also recently caused my family to move, because I found an acreage that has a natural pond. I have been out spying on tadpoles, water boatmen, mites and the like. I've also been trying to identify one certain organism, I know I've seen them before, but the name escapes me. Perhaps you know... It is about an inch long, clear, has two eye spots, I know it's not a paramecium, planaria, nor a diatom, definitely not a rotifer, not dragonfly, or damselfly larva, perhaps microspora - but the eyespots are throwing me off. I do not know everything that is out there. But I'd love to help you figure this out, if only for the challenge. Thing is, you description is very vague to me. A picture or drawing would help, but if that's not possible, are there other details you could provide? Is the creature vermiform? What colour are is it? Does it have legs? If so, how many? Antennae or tail(s)? If so how many, are they bushy or hairy? Does the creature have rings or segments? Any body hair present? In what manner does the creature move? It almost hurts me read that, especially coming from you, i thought we were pals! I accepted i was a geek, actually this summer, and here is how it happened: i was at a birthday party, fixing this (birthday) girl's wireless. So i'm sitting there, working on the machine, :) and one of her friends (girl) walks in. She's like, "so, what are you guys doing", this other (birthday girl's room mate, she's Chinese and pretty cool) is sitting on the sofa next to the table that i'm working on, she's like "watching the wiz at work". I laugh, and the girl that walked in comes again "no, for real what are you doing", so me being me, does not find anything else to say other then "not much, just downloading some porn, cuz she only had some weird stuff on here, so we had to show the birthday girl where she can get some HI-Def stuff" (yeah i know, real smooth eh... ). Then the girl that just walked in is like "Oh i just finished a term-long research on porn addiction, its not funny, its a real problem". So like 45 minutes of discussion of porn addiction later, i finally declare that i'm all done fixing everything on this computer (in hoped of stopping the third lecture) and the girl that was giving the lecture is like, oh, so what did you fix? So i go in and explain exactly what i fixed, and she's just like looking at me, turns to the chinese girl and she's like, you know, "Geeky guys really turn me on, like my previous boyfriend, he like fixes my computer and i'm like "you wanna have sex now?", oh wait, *turns to me* it's not a hint on anything" (this is the part where i agree with her by nodding my head, but am kicking myself in the *** for being a smart ***) So from that point on, my greeting has been similar to "Hi, my name is Alex. I'd really like to get to know you better, but i have to warn you, i'm a computer nerd, that likes science and history, pretty artistic and spend more then 8 hours a day behind a computer, i also very commonly come up with lengthy philosophical rants, but also likes to lots of have fun, i play volleyball, paintball, and stunt ride bikes and am basically up for anything..." (and by this time, i'm usually talking to the air i don't know, might be something i'm doing wrong...rofl... actually wondering if there is anything i'm doing right...its all for fun though, i get a kick out of it anyways.)
